Beat Biting Mites

3 Things you should know

What are they ?

A biting mite is any insect that requires a host to exist. This host can be either animal or plant. Generally however, most biting mites that originate from plants don't carry enough of a bite to be annoying to humans. But, as their numbers grow in an infestation, they could become a real problem. Biting mites that originate from animals, however, carry a bite that can become quite annoying to humans rather quickly. They also make allergic reactions worse for anyone in the home who deals with allergies on a regular basis.

Where do they come from ?

Biting mites who live on plants outside can hitch a ride indoors from anyone, animal or human, that rubs up against them outdoors and comes inside. As I said earlier, biting mites who live on animals are the real problem. They generally latch onto rodents living under, around or near the home. This list of rodents could include birds, raccoons, mice or even your pets.

How do I get rid of them ?

The first step is NOT to start spraying everything with insecticide. Biting mites generally come from dead animals so do a thorough inspection under, around and near your home looking for dead animals. A biting mite whose host animal has died has wandered into the house looking for another host. Once you have identified the source of the infestation. THEN it is time to spray. For indoor use, a good product is Tempo SC Ultra
. If you determine that the source of your infestation is from plants, you'll want to use Fruit Tree Spray
. Its important to make the distinction here because Fruit tree spray is not meant for indoor use just as Tempo SC is not meant for outdoor use.

Unfortunately, some infestations are inside voids in the walls where you can't reach. A good spray to use here is drione dust
.

Are there alternatives to spraying ?
