Your Beautiful Singing Voice

So You Want to have a Beautiful Singing Voice?

You are not alone, singing has been around forever and through the years many people have found great joy from both singing and listening. Its our built-in natural instrument and we all have one. Some better than others but all are equally wonderful and its possible for anyone to have their own beautiful singing voice with the proper voice care and training.

So How Do We Sing?

Its all a bit technical...

The voice is an instrument which is comprised of different parts. I have drawn this diagram to describe the parts and how they relate to one another. The lungs blow air through the vocal chords, which vibrate and create the sound. This sound then travels through the 'resonators' - the throat, mouth and nasal cavities.

It is here where your voice develops its own sound and character, a bit like the body of a wind instrument like a saxaphone makes a different sound to that of a clarinet but in both the instruments the initial sound is created by blowing air through a vibrating reed.

Finally the sound is formed into words with meaning by the tongue, lips and jaw.

Some people love her, some people leave the room when her songs come on the radio. What do you think?

The Voice Box and Vocal Cords

Getting into the detail...

Although they are called Vocal Cords, they are actually more accurately described as Vocal Folds. These vocal folds are just muscle which is covered in mucosa, which is the same stuff that we have covering the insides of our cheeks.

They are very short - only about 1cm to 2cm in length and should be pale in colour, if they are healthy.

These folds are open when breathing, almost closed when whispering and fully closed when singing and speaking. They move into different shapes to create different notes. From short and fat to long and thin. To create the note these folds vibrate as the air from the lungs passes through them.

It is the length of these vocal folds which determine how high or low you can sing. Men have longer vocal folds than women by about 10-12mm and this is why male voices generally sound lower than female.

Books on Singing Technique

There are may books available on singing technique. I have found that reading about singing has been really great for me in my quest to uncover my beautiful singing voice. I have been able to find out so much about the technical aspects of singing and how I produce the sound, right through to performance tips and even advice on getting a recording contract. Books are amazing - all that information, all written down and all you gotta do is read it!

Know Your Voice Type

Where does your range lie? High or Low?.....

Why is it important to know your voice type?

Because to know your voice type tells you about your working range, which is a good indication of what you are able to sing, and where your limits lie. Singing outside of your natural range is not only potentially harmful but it will also most probably not be a lot of fun!

If you would like to know your voice type, it is important to remember that not all voices will fall neatly into one type. Often a persons range will extend higher or lower than the main voice types. This is perfectly normal and actually there is confusion as to exactly which notes are correctly identified as the highest and lowest of each range.

It should also be noted that within each voice type singers can have a very different sounding voice, some are darker or heavier than others and this may affect whether they are chosen for certain parts in a musical or opera for example. So it is best to keep an open mind when deciding which voice types and ranges your voice falls in to.

Average Ranges of the Different Types of Voice

Can you see yourself?

These are the main voice types listed from lowest to highest - bass, baritone, tenor, contralto, alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano.

The three lowest are male voices and the four highest are female. The most common male voice type is the baritone and with female voices it is more common to be an alto or mezzo-soprano.

If you are keen to know your voice type then the best way is to actually be assessed by a choir director or singing teacher who will judge your voice and place you within one voice type. You could also make a note of the highest and lowest notes in your comfortable range and use a singing book or resource to determine your voice type.

Voice types and ranges vary greatly from person to person and every voice is special. When you do know your voice type, remember that it is just a type and the way your voice sounds is unique to you.

Interesting Opera Singing Fact

Did You Know?....

In Opera there are actually 25 different voice types, the lowest being the basso serioso and the highest the coloratura soprano. Many of these voice types are actually sub-dividing the main types depending on the quality of the voice as well as just the comfortable working range. So you can see that voice types and ranges can be used as an indication of your working range or they can be expanded to describe much more accurately the type of voice which a person has.

Keep Your Voice Beautiful

Prevention is better than the cure...

So now that you know how it works and have a better awareness of what is going on inside when you sing, I hope that you have a better understanding of why we need to maintain our voice and look after it.

See the problem with the voice, and especially with a beautiful singing voice, is that its not replaceable. So if you break it, well thats it gone - you can't just go to the shop and get a new one.

Below I have listed a few of the things that you can do to make sure you keep your voice in the best condition possible and make sure that you keep your beautiful singing voice for years to come.

Keep Hydrated

How many times do I hear this! Its the same answer for everything! Sport, good skin, better grades at school, cellulite and sunburn! I think there are enough good reasons to drink enough water but I'll give you this one more anyway...

When you get dehydrated your vocal cords swell up and get more stiff and this makes it difficult for them to move. It also means that you need more air to sing and your range won't be as big. So its better to keep hydrated. Carry a bottle of water around with you and sip on it throughout the day, especially if you live in a large city with car fumes and pollutants as these dry out your vocal cords even more.

Get Plenty of Rest

Again, this is another one that is recommended for many other areas of your life as well as voice care. If your voice is tired then you need to give it a rest. After a performance try not to talk too much, the same goes for the day before a performance. With overuse your voice will become tired and this could cause you problems. Its always better to prevent problems from occurring in the first place than have to remedy them afterwards.

Eat Healthy Food

ANOTHER one that we should all be doing already! Surely this is easier than you thought, huh?

You have to make sure that your body has all the nutrients it needs in order to keep working at peak performance and to have a beautiful singing voice you definitely need to be at your peak in terms of your physical health.

Warm Up Every Time

It is really important to have a proper warm up before each time you sing, whether that be a rehearsal or a performance. A good singing teacher or professional singing course can give you warm up exercises appropriate to your own personal singing goals.

Try Not To Cough

When you cough what is happening is that the vocal cords are being brought together and then they explode apart with enough force to shake off the mucous or foreign irritant. This is obviously not a good thing. It is possible to develop a technique for humming off any irritants and this should be used instead whenever possible.

Avoid Upper Respiratory Infections

Professional singers go to great lengths to avoid getting infections like laryngitis and sinusitis. Well actually i think everyone does but as they cause coughing and mucous build up as well as tiredness and dehydration they are especially dangerous for those wishing to develop or keep a beautiful singing voice.

Take it Easy On Stimulants

This includes alchohol, caffeine and illegal drugs. All are bad for the body and all are bad for the voice. Dehydration, overuse, being unaware of vocal abuse due to numbed senses - I don't think I really need to elaborate on that one.

Get Proper Training

The best piece of advice that I can give after all of the above is to get some training in the form of a singing teacher, either in a group or privately or even online. That way you will be sure that you have a proper warm up tailored to your needs, advice on technique and breathing, someone to guide you into developing your own personal style and assist with choosing music. Encouragement when you are doing the right thing and avoidance of doing the wrong thing, which could lead to later problems and mean that you could actually lose that beautiful singing voice that you are trying to develop.

I was more of a tenor/ baritone when I sang in theater many years ago. I don;t really sing much anymore with the exception of singing along to my favorite songs while I'm driving or something like that. I do enjoy it, but don't often have the opportunity to anymore and karaoke is simply not my thing:) But, I think you did a great job in this lens. 5 stars.

For a full warm up it is best to have lessons, where your teacher can record a warm-up for you, or to follow a warm-up recording from an online course or a cd.
Personally I start by warming up my face muscles with movements and then various exercises to warm my voice, especially in the higher notes. Yes it is good to sing different sylabuls ascending in semi-tones, and this is also a good way to track your progress if you are aiming to increase your range.
Aim to warm up for at least ten minutes before singing and never do anything which hurts.
    Happy Singing :-)

I've heard that singing doh me soh doh going up about ten times is the best way to warm up, others tell me it is to scream with your mouth shut.
