Small Wind Turbines Complement Architecture

Building Mounted Small Wind Turbines Integrate Architectural Appeal

The small wind turbine market is growing as cities, farms and places in between realize how an investment in building mounted wind can not only lower a building's electricity costs in a relatively short period, but also fend off inevitable electricity cost increases.

The things you are about to see here will change the way you think of the word wind turbine. Shaped for both appeal and utility, small wind turbines have changed the wind scape. Tall city buildings can be particularly productive with urban wind gardens to replace purchased electricity..

Compare new designs to the more familiar bee on a tower type, or the tall white oaks dotting the land. The grouping of some designs yield stunning results.

Regulations and restrictions on small wind vary federally to locally. Consumers need to know exactly what is required in their location.

Come see if small wind could work for you.

But smaller means less power production?

Not to worry

Size has no effect on calculating your return on investment. It is only relevant to the amount of power you choose to replace.

The really great thing about building mounted small wind turbines is that many buildings can directly benefit from multiple turbines or slightly lager ones like WePower. Poles can be used, too. Helix is on one.

Small wind turbines can be grouped for attractive small "wind gardens" as opposed to giant wind farms. Name the building, you can find a good solution that pays for itself and saves you future money. Money not spent.

Calculate your return on investment like you would any other investment. Investing in small wind is long term smart under the right circumstances.

Perfect for Cities

"ROI"

Not all renewable energy sources are the same in economic advantage depending on your climate. The return on investment period
will vary by type of renewable energy source and location. Example: Geothermal in Nevada pays back better and faster than in many locations. Other places cannot benefit at all.

Wind occurs in all seasons, every where. Average annual wind speeds vary by location. Proximity to bodies of water or rivers, higher elevaitons, and open spaces are usually higher wind classes.

Shapes of Familiarity: buzzy, industrial looks

Why not pick a wind turbine for architectural appeal?

There are shapes and sizes of small wind turbines that you may not picture when you hear the words "wind turbine." You ordinarily see those giant, imposing white towers in your mind's eye.

Some folks are familiar with these more industrial looking designs. Small wind turbines permit wider design options and placement. While these photos are industrial, notice that the turbines are small or not distinguishable.

Now see the beautiful wind turbines for buildings.

Waterway Winds

Class three wind will reap the most benefits for small wind turbines. Ask NREL. It is abundant in many parts of the US. This site reminds of us where wind blows best besides the dust bowl. Our waterway areas often have class three wind like this one near the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls.

Businesses Save on Energy with Wind Turbines

Handsome Commercial Uses for Small WindTurbines

The arrangement of these turbines gives this gas station a good greening. The operator wins directly because he did not purchase much of the power he needed to run the pumps and lighting. There is never a worry about having enough power because he can always supplement from the utility, since the system is grid-tied.

Design with the design

Modern Commercial Building with Swift electricity

Architects and designers are using wind turbines on structures designed to hold them.

Yet the design of Swift will make a lovely retrofit on an historic building. There is one on the Scottish Parliament Building and one on the Corning Tower on the Empire Plaza in Albany, New York.

So far, about 500 have been up and running for some time.

The small wind turbines by WePower have nice looks, and electrical output for the price. It is a bit heavier than the Swift horizontal turbine as it uses powerful magnets.

Stop Energy Dependence

think renewable, sustainable

Our daily dollar figure in oil imports from foreign sources whose stability is questionable is obscene, and most likely against our own security interests. T.Boone Pickens posts the daily figure on the Pickens Plan site.

Shall we all just fiddle while while oil-PEC burns us? American ingenuity is already bringing us inventions to do a lot right now.

Consider that with the use of solar and wind power, coupled with reasonable conservation, weatherization, and new transportation hybrids, we can put a pretty big dent in the tilt.

What a great moment in time for for Joe Anybody to steel his home and family economy against the coming tsunami of energy price increases and supply instability.

Does OPEC take the buyer's interests to heart before their own ordinarily?

Analysis: Shale energy boom dangles prospect of leap in economic growth
That holds back growth because an economy bleeds cash when imports outstrip exports. Dependence on expensive foreign oil has played a role in recessions since 1973. Last year alone, net energy imports totaled more than $300 billion, a sum even larger ...

American Small Wind Manufacturers

The Variety is Remarkable

While the USA is having a terrible time competing with China in cheap solar and PV production, several American manufacturers have come out with small wind turbines. Swift and WePower are my favorites, but the sampling of American made possibilities go from DIY home-made models to a ready-to-install list longer than you might think.

I doubt that they are ALL here, but this list if fairly exhaustive for American manufactured small wind turbines. Note that small wind and micro wind turbines are distinguishing themselves by building mount for micro. American companies selling wind turbines with American parts are included as best can be told. Many other manufacturers are located outside the US.

Find Current Wind Speeds and Gusts

Where should I put my turbine?

Location, Verical Axis and Horizontal Axis Turbines

Vertical Axis Wind Turbines vs. Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines

Wind turbines can be positioned various ways to operate. Generally, The two major ways energy is harvested in wind is either vertically or horizontally. The terms refer to which way the turbine "blades" run in relation to wind direction and the ground surface.

Vertical axis turbine blades are situated vertically to cross wind, at an angle perpendicular to the ground. Horizontal wind turbines face the wind horizontally, parallel to the ground.

Vertical axis wind turbines are often referred to by the acronym as VAWTs. "V, what?" to many folks. Most other wind turbines people are familiar with are horizontal axis, meaning they must be directed properly toward the wind. Vertical axis wind turbines are multi-directional, accepting wind from all directions.

The debate about the superiority of either design revolves around the amount of time the turbine will exposed to to appropriate wind speeds for the design against the drag created by the motion of the turbines. Which type will catch more wind for the longer period given any power reduction due to drag forces?

If this sound a little like a decision one faces on skippering a sailboat, you have the ideas in hand. In order to keel for speed, where shall I set the sail, at what angle to the wind, or is this the spinnaker run?

The real answer to small wind turbine selection may have much more to do with location, wind variables and averages, location, the particular building, location. Did I mention location?

This is not to say that other designs have not approached the difference by integrating aspects of each standard directional wind turbine. Helix Wind is one example, or the designs that like DNA strands wound about .

Looks aren't everything, naturally. Old farm windmills have pumped water for centuries without being too pretty. But whether it is horizontal, vertical, or DNA-ish, the new designs in small or micro wind turbines are architecturally pleasant and work horses to boot. Building mounted, and grid tied, economically one cannot lose.

You can do nothing and pay crazily unstable electricity rates (and they only go up), or you can replace power you already buy, hedge the future rates and have the turbine pay for itself before the warranty runs out. I haven't heard a deal that good since phone calls were actually a dime, directory assistance both both free and manned by humans.

Its a no brainer, like having a 401k or never saving a dime, given the option.
