Should Beauty Queens be considered role models?

Over the past several years, beauty queens and beauty pageants have been trying their hardest to disprove the notion that they should be considered role models. I don't think they can honestly call themselves role models. here's three cases why...

Case #1 Miss South Carolina 2007 trying to speak coherently

Miss Teen South Carolina tries to answer an education question

I'm not quite sure what kind of girls Miss Teen USA contestants are trying to be role models to, but I think we can safely rule out those girls that want to go to college....

Case #2 : Alcoholic Beauty Queens should always be given a second chance

Miss Teen USA 2006 Tara Conner and Alcoholism

The reigning Miss Teen USA for the past year admitted to being an alcoholic and was given a second chance. Personally, I couldn't care less if she was or if she kept her crown. I just think that the institution of Miss Teen USA has lost all credibility as a role model....

Case #3: a critically acclaimed movie mocking the beauty industry

Little Miss Sunshine is an indictment of the pageant industry

If you don't believe me yet, you must sit down and watch Little Miss Sunshine. It is a satirical comedy about the stupidity of the beauty pageant industry.

If you've seen this film and still feel that beauty queens should be considered role models, please let me know.

What do you think? Should beauty pageant winners still consistently be described by the media as role models?

Too funny!!! I love it!!! Role Model may be a bit of a stretch. However, being a makeup artist who has spent countless hours behind the scene with these beauty queens I can honestly say that the majority of them have a pretty good head on their shoulders and most are over achievers in academics as well. For those beauty queens who have gone astray it's too bad, cause the organizations that these ladies contribute to and serve throughout the year really is the honor and privilege of the winner. Now why aren't these pageants stressing the service that these ladies give to local, state, national and international causes, instead of putting so much emphasis on their LOOKS?

I think you've got a great point, and a good lens. My only suggestion is to be careful of too much focus on making fun of the contestants. I would argue the real villain here is the pageant industry. The contestants are hurt as much (or more) than those who look up to them.

Wasn't Miss Teen USA also breaking the law by drinking in the first place (legal age is 21 here)? So, she's a criminal and an addict? Nice.
