Learn More About Your Founding Fathers

Glenn Beck has opened up his own university! No, there isn't a football team, and you won't even get a degree when you finish, but you can learn a lot about the founding fathers. Although Beck is the president of Beck U, he doesn't teach any of the courses... he gets the real experts to do that.

You can become a student at Beck University fairly easily. All you have to do is sign up for Insider Extreme at Glennbeck.com. If you pay by the month, it's $9.95 per month... you can pay up front for an entire year for $74.95, which is the best deal (I used part of my income tax refund to sign up for the year, it was a great deal).

If you don't want to sign up for Glenn Beck University, you can get books off recommended reading list and study on your own. I doubt it would be as entertaining as the University (I recently watched Faith 101 on Demand and it was very good), but it will give you some important information.

Many of these books that are on the Glenn Beck University Reading list are free! When they are free to download, I have included the link to the free copy. If you prefer a paper copy and one is available, I will include a link to that as well. These early edition books that are out of copyright can be a little more difficult to read than modern books, but it is so important to read books that are closer to the original source, to find out what the people were thinking in the past. In the last century, we have lost touch with what made the pioneering Americans the great people that they were.

Faith 101

The Black Robed Regiment

David Barton, Copyright 2010 Brooke LorrenPreachers are the people that really made our country what it is today. Perhaps that is why our country has been blessed by God for so many years. Faith 101 discusses the preachers that influenced the founding fathers, and even talked about most of the principals that made it into the Declaration of Independence.

Preachers also led their congregations during fighting during the American Revolution. Some of the Revolutionary Regiments were just men from churches going out to fight.

John Adams said "Our pulpits have thundered" for good reason.

The Chaplains and Clergy of the Revolution

Joel Tyler Headly

This book discusses many of the clergy that were involved in the American Revolution, and the contributions that they made to the American Revolution.

The Patriot Preachers of the American Revolution

The Pulpit of the American Revolution

John Wingate Thornton

If you take the Faith 101 Course at Beck University, many of the names in this book will be familiar to you. This book covers some of the preachers' political sermons of the time. Preachers that talk like this today would probably lose their 501(3)c status. Whether you take the course or not, these sermons are relevant to learn about today. How did the preachers respond to government oppression in the 1700s? Find out in this book.

Hope 101

David Buckner, copyright 2010 Brooke LorrenHope 101 is taught by David Buckner (you might remember him as the guy that passed out on Beck's show). He is a professor at Columbia University, and he took some time out of his busy schedule to teach this class.

The books for this class are newer and are not out of copyright. You may be able to check them out at your local library (or digital library). I am including links here in case you want to buy them.

David Buckner Passes Out

You couldn't have scripted this any better. When the treasuries go, what happens? "I'm passin' out." I'm right there with you David... I might just be passing out too.

Freakonomics

I read this book several years ago. I checked this out from my local digital library. If you thought that economics class was boring, you still might enjoy this book. Instead of dealing with money, this book deals with how economics can teach you about the mob, cheating teachers, and other things that are relevant and interesting to the masses.

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (P.S.)

Amazon Price: $6.74 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

This has got to be the most entertaining book on economics you'll ever read. It also may help you see patterns in things that you haven't seen patterns in before.

Emotional Intelligence

Daniel Goleman

You may have heard about this book before (or even read it before). It's fairly well known, and talks about how Emotional Intelligence is just as important as IQ (and in some cases, may be more important).

Emotional Intelligence: 10th Anniversary Edition; Why It Can Matter More Than IQ

Amazon Price: $15.13 (as of 05/28/2012)Buy Now

This book earned a four star overall rating from Amazon.com. Some claim that this book changed their lives; others feel that it wasn't what they expected. It has been a bestseller in this category of books for years.

Lies the Government Told You

Judge Napolitano

Beck talks about how the Truth gives you Hope. You can't have true hope without the truth. We can't have hope unless we tell ourselves the truth, as well as find out what the truth is concerning the government.

Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity

John Stossel

You might remember back when John Stossel was with 20/20 and he came out with this book. If you didn't read it when it first came out, you might want to check it out. Some of the things that we think are true actually aren't. Stossel makes a good case for some of the stupidity in this book.

Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel - Why Everything You Know is Wrong

Charity 101

Charity 101 teaches about the Constitution. How the government was formed, how the powers are separated, and how the states are separated from the federal government. Further lessons will teach how the structure of the government is designed to allow us to be more charitable as a people.

Charity 101 part 1

Whose Constitution is It?

For more information about how the Constitution belongs to the people, these resources may be of help to you.

A recommended web resource on how the Constitution came about is available at Teaching American History.org.

Charity 101 part 2

Federalism

Why is federalism set up the way that it is? Find out more about federalism in Charity 101 part 2.

One of the first resources that you might want to look at, especially if you want to go to the original sources, is The Federalist Papers. You can read the Federalist Papers online for free at sites like Yale Law School, but if you prefer a paper copy, it is available at places like Amazon.com. For the subject of federalism, you will want to see papers 9, 10, 14, 15, 39, and 45.

Charity 101 part 3

Separation of Powers

James Stoner explains the separation of powers in his Charity 101 lecture in section 3. The subject can be a little complex; if you want more information about the subject, there are plenty of sources.

The Federalist Papers are a source for information about the separation of powers. Again, you can read them for free at Yale Law School. For the subject of separation of powers, you will want to see papers 47-51, 55-57, 62, 70, and 78.

Charity 101 Part 4

Rights

What are your rights under the Constitution? Professor Stoner doesn't really get into rights much in his lecture (although he does mention that the first amendments, the Bill of Rights, were ratified almost immediately), but if you want to learn more, there is plenty of extra reading that you can do.

Charity 101 part 4

Republicanism

Republicanism is big right now (not the party, but the idea of the people hiring representatives). Liberals want more democracy... but why did we elect officials in the first place? Because we don't have time to sit around reading bills... "Read the bill... I get a kick out of people telling me to read the bill." We're paying our representatives to read the bill for us. If they're not reading the bill, then what are we paying them for? Find out more about the republican system of government in these books.
