Should You Become A Game Tester?

Got A Knack For Video Games?

If you're anything like me, you've been playing video games since you could hold the controller. Most game testers became who they are because they have a knack for video games.

Some video game testers are just so used to looking for details and scoping out where the hidden areas of a game is. That is a skill you can develop with time when you become a game tester.

If you don't have a knack for video games, does that mean you can't be a video game tester? NO! Anyone can be a video game tester, all you need is a PC or a next gen console(PS3 Xbox 360, Wii), and you'll need basic computer skills.

You will need to be a good, clear writer. There will be a lot of emailing feedback back and forth so you will want to be able to get that information as fast and clear as possible.

Keep in mind, even if you love playing video games doesn't mean you'll make a great game tester. The actual work for video game testers is not like playing a game at all. It's a job, so it can't ALL be playing video games.

Before You Become A Game Tester

Prepare Yourself, Know What's Coming

Don't just rush out there expecting to play a game, rate it and get paid. Game Testing actually does take some skills.

The first thing you can do which i found is a great way to get your feet wet is participate in public beta tests for popular video games.

If you play World Of Warcraft, they usually have beta testing for realms, usually around the time a new expansion comes out or a large patch.

So go check it out. That way you get comfortable with how the whole game testing business work and what you would be doing if you become a game tester.

Public beta tests are great for a new game tester, it gives you room to sharpen your scope eye, the one you'll be using to find all the little details in the game you may be testing.

How Often Will You Work As A Game Tester?

When it comes to being a game tester, its about to YOU. You can choose to take on one assignment after another or if you feel you've made enough you can take a break and play for fun and not work.

Most video game testers don't do that. If you're new to testing video games I advice you take as many assignments as possible and start building up your resume. remember the better your resume the more $$$ in your pocket!

There also are some companies that have their own testing centers which is more job oriented. In this case, you are most likely working very closely with the game developers themselves.

So If you want to develop your skills and maybe move onto game developing, the option will be there. As long as you take initiative in you're work and make your goals known, there are always people who will help transition into the next step step in the gaming industry.
