Non-Religious God Parent

Can a Non-Religious Person Become a Godparent?
I was asked to be Godparent to my sister's first child. Naturally, I was more than keen to take up the job, despite not being a religious person.
I was told that because I do not believe in God, I therefore cannot become a Godparent. I felt this was wrong but needed to prove that you do not need to believe in God to become a Godparent.
I decided to start with the most logical question first... What does it actually mean to be a Godparent?

What Does It Mean To Be a Godparent
The word Godfather literally means "Little Granddad" but what does it actually mean to be a Godparent? Traditionally, a Godparent's job is to be informally responsible for helping their God Child through their religious journey. Of course, as a non-religious Godparent, how can you honestly guide anyone through their religious journey if I do not believe there is even a God?!
A core part of the role as Godparent, is to act as a guide to the child and offer support as various times throughout their life. The Godparent will be expected to attend the Christening/Baptism and also certainly attend other events such as birthday parties and school events. Depending on how much of a role the Godparent has played in the life of the child, he may be asked to play a part at that child's wedding. Essentially, the role of Godparent is a life-long commitment and not just a "one day gig"!

Can You Be a Non-Religious Godparent
Some will argue whether it is appropriate for a non-religious person to become a Godparent, but the fact remains that a Godparent in the 21st Century has a different meaning to what it had a hundred years ago. The Godparent will still be expected to set a good example for your God Child but this does not mean that you have to encourage the child to believe in something that you do not believe in. This in itself, would be setting a bad example!
The church will almost certainly frown upon a non-religious man becoming a Godparent but the most important thing is that the parents of the child have chosen someone that they trust and know cares about the child, despite their religious beliefs.

How To Become a Non-Religious Godparent
To become a Godparent, you must first ask yourself whether you are actually ready to take on this responsibility. You need to be honest with yourself as this is a big commitment to make - most parents will understand if you decide to turn this down.
If you choose to become a Godparent but do not believe in God, you may decide to do this using the religious Godfather role as a template, or base for which to build yourself on. For example, instead of guiding your God Child through their "religious" journey, you can pledge to guide them through their "life" journey. It will be a good idea perhaps make a formal pledge to the parents and child, explaining what you will do for the child.
As a non-religious Godparent, you may choose to pledge to the child that you will inspire them throughout their life and encourage independence and personal growth. You could choose to offer support to the child at different stages in their life. You could also choose to uphold your standards and morals and use these to set an example to the child.
Essentially, to become a non-religious Godparent, you will need to take the traditional role and adjust it to suit your non-religious beliefs and values.

- Very interesting lens. As someone who shares your views of not believing in God, but strongly respecting others' religions and beliefs, I've often questioned whether I could play the role as a godparent to someone or if it would be appropriate to have godparents for my children. Great info on being a non-religious godparent.

- Thanks for stopping by! For me, becoming a godparent was a natural step for someone that I care so much for. Even though I do not believe in God, I still carry out my duties as god father to the best of my abilities and I am confident that my god daughter will grow up to become a polite, honest and caring person (as is the Christian way!)

- I didn't have a Godparent, but my husband who was brought up Catholic did. My friends who chose Godparents for their children put a lot of thought into who would fill the role. It's quite an honor, especially when the relationship lasts a lifetime.

- Well I would have flunked if there was a test on what a GOD parent's role is. Now as for not believing in GOD... even after seeing and experiencing my own life's serious coincidences that I choose to say are devine interventions or miracles I still have doubts. But I would rather seek GOD and trust in wooey, wooey stuff than to not seek GOD and take my chances. Now if all of the religious stuff ends up being just fluff than at worst you have given your GOD child a moral upbringing, but if you choose to just have your GOD child "do the right thing" and build their character without GOD but there really is a GOD... then how will you feel about you being responsible for leading a child to hell?
It's a huge responsibility to have your GOD child's future here and thereafter on your hands. I held my son and cried as I wondered how GOD could have ever sent HIS Only begotten SON to die for us, but you know what? HE love us that much. HE loves you too.

- Well that's the aim of what I'm doing with my godchild. I'm not teaching her the ways of Christianity but I will be reinforcing the morals that Christianity supports. I couldn't honestly guide her through her religious journey if I'm not a believer myself.
One thing I didn't put in my lens was that I do totally respect religion and I'm entirely open to the idea but I'm just not convinced at the moment.
