Bed Bugs Are Back....With a Vengeance

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) have been around for thousands of years and were almost wiped out by the use of DDT (a pesticide) in the 1940's and 1950's. But DDT and other products similar to it were banned when they were found to be harmful to humans causing birth defects and respiratory problems.
Now, the nasty little nocturnal bloodsucking parasites that feed on humans and other warm blooded animals have returned with a vengeance.

Attention: If you have a bed bugs infestation and want to get rid of it FAST...

What Does a Bed Bug Look Like?

Bed bugs are approximately 1/4 inch long, oval, flat with 6 legs, and are a reddish-brown color resembling an apple seed.

Female bed bugs can lay 5-7 eggs each week (after a meal) and up to 500 eggs during their life span. The eggs look like grains of rice.

The eggs the female bed bugs lay hatch into nymphs. Newly hatched nymphs are approximately 1/16th of an inch long and white to pale yellow in color and will take on the reddish-brown color of the adults after their first meal. The nymphs look like small adult bed bugs and will become adults in 5 weeks.

How to Use Diatomaceous Earth to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

Diatomaceous Earth is messy but also very effective. You should use a mask when applying the diatomaceous earth since it is a fine dust and may irritate your lungs.

You can use a shaker to sprinkle it on the carpet and then sweep it in with a broom. Leave it on the carpet for a few days. If you have a shop vac use it because with a regular vacuum you are going to have to stop every few minutes to make sure that it doesn't get clogged.

Also remove light switch and outlet covers and sprinkle the diatomaceous earth inside the wall. Make sure to sprinkle it on the baseboards and use a broom or a paint brush to get it into any crevices or cracks.

Wherever you see them use the diatomaceous earth.

Bed Bugs and Their Hosts

Bed bugs feed when their "host" (warm blooded human or animal) is sleeping and will adjust their schedule to their hosts schedule. Bed bugs detect carbon dioxide emitted from warm-blooded animals so they know when the host is asleep.

It takes a bed bug around 5 to 10 minutes to finish a meal. A bed bug can consume up to 7 times its weight in a single feeding.

Bed Bug Bites

The bite itself is painless at the time it is being administered due to a sort of anesthetizing agent that the bed bug injects into its host, which allows the bite to be painless.
Some individuals never react to bed bug bites while others have an allergic reaction and suffer from intense itching, swelling and the risk of infection from scratching the bites.

Oh my! Bed bugs ... gives me the creeps to find these little critters in my bed. When we traveled to BVI for our catamaran vacation, the hotel we stayed at the first night had them. Wonder why there is such a proliferance of these critters?
