What size bed do you need? What is the difference between a single and a twin bed? How big is a full bed compared to a king size? These are all questions you should arm yourself with the answer to and here is where you can find the answers. Working against actual measurements rather than a pure description is the key. Good double bed sellers will always recommend the mattress size (in cms) to match the bed frame. If in doubt, ask them!

• Single Bed: Also known as a Twin Bed, designed for one person to sleep in and will usually be 3 foot wide or 39 inches wide and would be 6 feet long.
• Twin Bed: Also known as a Single Bed, designed for one person to sleep in and will usually be 3 foot wide or 39 inches wide and would be 6 feet long There are extra length versions available for the taller sleeper.
• Three Quarter Bed: An increasingly rare size bed, it is a 4ft wide bed which is smaller than a double bed and really designed for just one person, however when they are found they are usually being purchased by the parents of teenagers with small rooms, they provide a compromise between having space for a sleepover but not taking up the whole room, you may have trouble finding bedding and headboards for these.
• Full Bed or Double Bed: Designed to sleep 2 people, what most people have in their bedrooms as a couple that sleep together. Usually four and a half feet wide but sometimes a bit more these are easy to find bedding and headboards for.
• Queen Size: Larger than a full bed, a Queen size provides a more comfortable and spacious sleep for 2 people, increasingly popular as room sizes shrink in modern housing developments, usually 5 foot wide.
• King Size: The daddy of beds, 5 and a half feet wide, plenty of room for 2 people to sleep outstretched.
• Super King Size: The big one, six feet of space like having twin beds pushed together. The ultimate in space for bed sharing couples.

Divans: act as bases for mattresses and either have springs which allow the mattress to adapt to the body's contours, or a solid top which provides firmer support. A divan is useful if you're tight on space as most are available with drawers to provide additional storage.

Storage beds: feature built-in drawers that free up valuable space in other parts of the bedroom. Another space-saving feature is divan storage - revealed by opening the top of the bed with an easy-to-operate mechanism.

Bedsteads: are more decorative and will provide a definite classic or contemporary look to your bedroom. A 'bowed slat' (or 'sprung slat') bedstead will give more cushioned support than 'solid slat'.

Guest/folding: and storage beds provide flexible solutions for overnight guests. With a small bedroom, it makes sense to use your bed as a secondary storage option.
