Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite

Bed bugs in Vancouver are increasingly on the rise. They are horrible and invading. The one thing we have to realize is that bed bugs can come from anywhere, you can be travelling and bring them home in your suitcase or pick them up in used furniture. It has nothing to do with your cleanliness as bed bugs do not discriminate. They are looking for a warm bodied creature to feed on whether they find you at the Fairmont hotel or the Quality inn. Vancouver is a great city but it has a huge bed bug problem to deal with. Complaints about bed bugs in Metro Vancouver have doubled over the last 6 years. With the 2010 Olympics being hosted in Vancouver not only will we have new international visitors of the human kind but also in the form of bed bugs. Thousands of dollars a year have been spent on treating bed bugs in apartment and hotel dwellings. Big business for the exterminators, bad news for the tenants.

WHAT ARE BED BUGS?

Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed on warm blooded creatures. They are usually brown and flat and attracted by warmth and the presence of carbon dioxide. Bed bugs are nocturnal creatures who hide during the day and arise from their hiding spot during the night usually before dawn. They can go more than a year without food and there is no evidence to suggest that bed bugs transmit disease.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE BED BUGS?

One of the easiest indicators of bed bugs is if you wake up with small welts on your body. These bites might not always be a result of a bed bug but they are a good starting point. Look for small blood stains on your sheets as another indicator.

Bed Bugs will travel with you if your not careful. You might have carried one home after staying in a hotel or motel. Finding them before they find you is the key. Check the creases of your mattress thoroughly and vacuum and steam clean them out of their hiding places.

Be prepared to hire an exterminator if any evidence of these bugs are found.
