NATURAL DUVETS (Down, Feather, Silk & Wool)

1. Your duvet should be aired outside in cool weather before use to eliminate any odors from the natural product and also to freshen your duvet after use. When airing, clip under the clothes line to encourage movement of fill to middle of duvet. Do NOT drape over the line! This can damage the boxes and baffles of your duvet! Airing your duvet helps to maintain its freshness, fluffiness, and insulating qualities.

2. Before placing your new duvet in a duvet cover and lay on the bed for three to four hours to allow the fill to loft. Failure to use a cover will cause premature wear. It will take about one week of use before the down lofts to its full potential.

3. Constantly lying on a duvet is damaging to the fill and the baffles - push aside when possible.

4. Dry clean only when necessary - dry cleaner fluid can be damaging to both the feathers/down and the baffles and use a reputable cleaner who specializes in cleaning down. Use a cover to protect your duvet and then you only have to wash or dry clean the cover. A properly maintained duvet should only require cleaning after five to ten years of use, if at all. It will shrink if washed, possibley causing puckering in the stitching and loss of down filling. Small spots or stains may be removed by using warm water and mild soap. To dry, use a hair dryer on low heat.

5. If or when you store your duvet - wrap in a loose breathable cotton bag or sheet in a well ventilated area - NEVER store in plastic after use, the fill will mildew!

6. Rotate your duvet top to bottom/bottom to top every few weeks to keep from always having same boxes at the top where more wear will occur and to ensure even distribution of the down.

LINEN CARE

With proper care your quality linens will last you a lifetime. Here are simple guidelines to follow to ensure that you get the best wear and beauty out of your household linen.

READ THE LABELS
The single most important rule in caring for your linen is also the most simple and obvious one. Always read care labels on your linen and follow the manufacturer's instrucitons.

WASH ALL LINEN BEFORE USE
During the manufacturing process all linen is coated with a protective substance called sizing. Sizing gives the product a stiff and uncomfortable feel. It also causes some linen to expel a distasteful odor. Prior to using any of your linen you should wash them in order to remove sizing material.

WASH LINEN IN WARM OR COLD WATER
Excessive heat will damage your linen. And if your linen product contains rubber or spandex avoid even minimal amounts of heat. That's why we recommend that you always dry on a low temperature setting.

WASH SIMILAR COLOURS TOGETHER
Never mix light and dark colours in the same wash. And for products with deep colours, add a quarter cup of vinegar to the firts wash to help set the colours.

WASH AND DRY SHEETS SEPARATELY
Wash and dry your sheets alone - don't mix with other fabrics or garments. NEVER wash your towels with your sheets as this will cause piling.

CARE FOR DOWN AND FEATHERS
Down and feather products require dry cleaning once every 3 to 4 years and should be dry cleaned by a reputable company. Air them out to refresh between cleanings, and always use duvet covers and pillow protectors to ensure longer life.

SYNTHETIC LINEN PRODUCTS
Synthetic products can be machine washed in an oversized maching. Choose the "no heat" setting on your dryer. Be careful, because excessive heat will damage fibre and ruin the product. Once and again, be sure to always use duvet covers and pillow protectors to ensure the life of your synthetic duvet or pillow.

USE MILD COLOURFAST DETERGENTS Avoid detergents with whiteneners, brighteners, colour boosters or colour enhancers. Arm & Hammer have been recommended by our suppliers.

PILLOWS

SYNTHETIC PILLOWS
Synthetic pillows are filled with polyester fibre fill. Micro fibres vary in quality which is determined by the number of channels per fibre construction.
Rolled Pillows: Fibres are rolled like a jelly roll, in various densities of soft, medim and firm.
Chopped Fill: Loose minute sized puff ball fibres forming a pillow, the most down like in a synthetic pillow.
The firmness depends on the weight.
Benefit: Synthetic pillows are hypo-allergenic.

SYNTHETIC PILLOW CARE
Although manufacturers suggest synthetic pillows are fully washable, pillows are never the same after they have been washed. A pillow protector is always suggested to be used to keep the pillow from getting soiled and to keep it's shape. Cleaning the pillow protector is much easier than cleaning the actual pillow.

NATURAL PILLOWS
Two types: Feather and Down

FEATHER PILLOWS
The feathers used in these pillows are water fowl (either goose or duck) and are generally considered to be a firm pillow.

CARE
Air the pillow out before use, outside if possible to eliminate any odour (caused by natural products and plastic packing during storage). Dry cleaning is recommended for feather pillows. Never wash a feather pillow. A pillow protector is strongly suggested to prolong life of the pillow.

DOWN SURROUND PILLOWS
Many pillow manufacturers produce these pillows made with an inner chamber of feathers surrounded by down. This pillow offers both support from the feathers as well as the softness and comfort of down next to the face.

CARE
Pillows should have protectors to keep down in place. Dry Clean Only. Washing is not recommended.

DOWN PILLOWS
Down pillows are made up of white goose down and may contain up to 10% feather content. The down provides a soft, totally pliable low loft pillow that can be shaped to form a cradle for the head. The pillow breathes well and has a longer life span than a synthetic pillow.

CARE
Down pillows should be aired from time to time. Always use a pillow protector to keep shape and prevent soiling. Dry Clean Only. Do not wash.

DOWN FEATHER
A down feather pillow has feathers and down mixed together in the same pillow. It is often 50/50 or 75/25 down and feather. This construction offers more height and loft in the pillow.

SHEETS

Q. What is the best way to care for my sheets?
A. All sheets should be laundered separately, never with towels (this causes pilling). Sheets should be washed with cold water and vinegar in the first wash cycle. 3/4 cup per medium load. This helps to set the colour. Detergent should not be "Ultra" cleaning power, this causes sheets to fade. Use 1/4 of what usually is recommended, sheets are not dirty, they only need freshening in cool water. (brief wash cycle). Shake the wrinkles from the sheets before putting them in the dryer and always use a cool dryer setting to help prevent shrinking. For cotton sheets remove from dryer, while still tumbling. Flannel sheets will shrink 3", when drying. Always wash flannel alone or fluff will be all over everything!

DETERMINING THE QUALITY OF SHEETS
There are two things to look in a quality sheet: Thread count and Fabric.

THREAD COUNT
Thread count is the number of threads per square inch. This includes the count of the horizontal threads (weft), and the vertical threads (warp). Percale is soft with a minium of 180 threads per square inch.

HIGH THREAD COUNTS
Anything over 180 threads per square inch is considered a high thread count. These sheets are generally smoother, softer and last longer. They are made with either 100% cotton or poly/cotton blends. The higher the thread count the more durable and luxurious the product.

Threadcounts of 200-300 or higher are known for their superior durability and softness.

PERCALE SATEENS
Percale sateens are a 100% cotton fabric that is woven into a satin type weave. The special square weave gives fabric a softer hand and has extra strength, color fastness and durability.

FITTED POCKETS
A fitted pocket is the portion that fits over the mattress corner. We carry pockets sizes ranging from 8" up to 18"(for extra deep mattresses).

COTTON SHEETS
100% cotton is naturally absorbent (allowing for a more restful sleep, by absorbing the sleeper's perspiration) Cotton pills less and lasts longer as well as providing the softest "hand" (feel) and the best nights sleep. As everyone's personal preferences may vary, light ironing may be required.

COTTON/POLYESTER BLENDS
50/50 blend is the strongest and most durable blend weave. Blends withstand repeated washing; no ironing is needed.

FLANNELS
Flannels are created by brushing cotton fabric ("nap"). Nap holds heat (the best way to judge quality is an even appearance and feel). Flannel is woven with pre-dyed yarns for ultimate softness and the quality is measured by grams/square inch.

TOWELS

EGYPTIAN COTTON TOWELS
These towels are generally 100% Egyptian cotton (long staple fibres) making these very soft and luxurious.

PIMA COTTON
Brilliant, strong and silky cotton fiber that is durable and long lasting. Soft, has a great "hand", and a brilliant luster.

CARE
Machine wash your towels in cold water and make sure to wash them separately without your sheets (washing them with sheets will cause the sheets to pil). All towels do not perform well if fabric softener or bounce sheets are used. These softeners sit on top of the fibre supersaturating it. The towel will not dry you if this happens.
