Bedroom Decorating Ideas

I have not always had great bedroom decorating ideas - in fact I have to admit there were times when my bedroom was a disaster area. With a severe lack of wardrobe space, old faded quilt cover, blanket as a curtain - it is truly was not a pretty site.

But for the past year or so I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about home decorating and in particluar bedroom decorating.

I have gone from total dunce to ...well I'm no expert but I do love it.

Anyway, enough about me. It is bedroom decorating tips and ideas that you came here for.

Bedroom Decorating Tip #1

The Book That Started It All

Well, not exactly a decorating tip rather than a "must read" tip. I wish I had started with this book a year ago because I have read alot of #@$%^ in the meantime. The book is titled "The Secrets To Home Decorating Success" and I can't sing it's praises high enough, written by a real professional - Janice Price.

Oh - nearly forgot - you can get a copy of it HERE

Bedroom Decorating Tip #2

Paint Color

Do you need to make your bedroom look bigger?

Most people will answer a loud "Yes" to that.

Well the first step is paint. You need to choose what the experts call a receding color. These are the green; blue; and purpleish colors or any combination of these. However, do avoid the
darkest of these, as this could make the room look even smaller.

Here is a great article about "Decorating With Color".

Bedroom Decorating Tip #3

Rugs

Rugs - Sometimes you can't choose your floor - you can't afford anything new or you are renting. Don't let an ugly floor ruin your decorating mood.

Just add spice to your floor with some fabulous area rugs. And the good thing is that in todays market there are heaps to choose from:-
Shag Area Rugs in bright colors
Contemporary Area Rugs using fabulous textures
Go natural with a bamboo are rug
Be exotic with a traditional oriental area rug

Don't stop at just one - mix it up and create your own style. Did you get that "Your Own Style" - this is what decorating is all about.

Bedroom Decorating Tip #4

Remove Clutter

Nothing is more distracting in the bedroom then clutter.

Piles of books on the floor; yesterdays jumper on the dresser; shoes kicked off on the floor; and if your room is anything like mine the list just goes on and on.

So the first step to removing the clutter is to have a BIG tidy up. Get some garbage bags and boxes.

Put rubbish that no one will want in the bags - this includes those daggy old undies in the draw - then this promptly goes in the bin.

Then get all the 'good' stuff that you have not used or worn for 12 months. Put it all in the box. Tape up the box and put it in the car. First trip past a thrift bin - drop it off.

Now, your room should be starting to look better!

What about things that don't belong in your room. Books and magazines out to the den; It's just amazing what we accumulate.

Now put all the clothes away, dust down all the surfaces.

I'm sure your room is looking much better by now.

Bedroom Decorating Tip #5

Storage

Storage Ideas - If your lacking storage space, consider purchasing cabinets and bookshelves that reach your bedroom ceiling. That will give you more storage space, without using so much precious bedroom floor space.

Bedroom Decorating Tip #6

Lighting

Light and mirrors can add the illusion of space.

Keep your window coverings open during the day and add wall mirrors to get a feeling of more space in your bedroom. Also, make sure lighting in the room goes all the way to walls. Dark corners can make your bedroom seem smaller. Lams on your side tables or floor lamps are great for lighting the dark areas.

Bedroom Decorating Tip #7

Furniture Placement

The approach you take to arranging your bedroom furniture can make a big difference to the comfort, functionality and style of your room. Here are some tips for arranging your bedroom furniture and other furniture throughout your home.

The starting place is to find just the right place for your bed as it will become the focal point of the room.
If your window will be open frequently, you may want to keep the bed away from the window to avoid an uncomfortable draft.

Carefully choose a place for your bed that won't create any obstructions in the room.

Don't block doors or make it hard to get into a closet, for example. If you have plenty of space, you can angle the bed in the corner of the room, giving your room a unique look.
