Bedroom Design: Tips & Trends
When deciding what to do with your bedroom I think it's important to first figure out the function of your bedroom. Everyone has their own idea of the "perfect" bedroom. What is yours and what do you like to do in yours besides sleeping...Reading? Watching TV? Romance?
Think about what makes YOU happy and relaxed and then incorporate it into your bedroom....Add your favorite colors, music and scents.

Is This Your Idea of a Perfect Bedroom?

I know a lot of people think they have to go all out and have their bedding be over the top and match everything else in the collection...It's not true, so if this isn't you, don't do it and if it is, enjoy. :)
What Size Is Your Mattress?
Just curious Poll....
In the past the most popular bed choice was the Queen, but I really think the King is making headway....

Achieving the PERFECT bedroom for YOU!
-
Start paying attention.
If you stay in a lot of hotels this is even easier, what do you love about those hotel rooms? What do you dislike? When you stay at your parents or friends houses how do you sleep? Are there any ideas that you would like to incorporate? If you sleep like a baby in certain hotel chains check what mattresses they are using, most likely if it's upscale chain they sell those mattresses, great way to test them out don't you think? -
Consider having winter bedding and summer bedding.
I love changing out all my bedding seasonally. I love to sleep in a cold house so having lots of blankets and my duvet in winter is great. But come spring I love to shed my winter bedding for lighter options, such as a light blanket and coverlet.
High threat count sheets regardless of the season are a must. Right on the front of the label, the manufacturer will tell you the thread count of the sheets. This refers to the number of threads per square inch in both directions in the weave. The higher the thread count, the more luxurious the feel of a fabric. For good wear and to get the softest feel, I suggest you choose a thread count above 250 but no lower than 200. I love the Italian sheets. They are not only buttery soft but if you get them at Tuesday Morning there are definite deals to be had. -
Start a bedroom plan.
Your furniture will need more room than actual space it takes up. For example your bed will need at least two feet on either side for easy bed making and just getting around it for traffic flow. (Closets need at least three feet in front to allow for pull out the drawers or open doors.)
Bedroom Specific Design Books
When you need a little inspiration check out the following books....
Time For A Nap
Comfort Level...
-
READING:
If you don't read in your bedroom, read on to the next step. But if you do, think about where you would like to read and either make your bed more comfortable to do that, ie: more pillows for back and neck support, better lighting, a place to put your book after you are done for the night so you don't have to get out of bed or throw it on the floor.
If you have a chair make it your reading chair. Add adequate lighting, maybe a throw blanket, reading glasses, a small table to again hold your book when you are done. -
WATCHING TV:
I don't think I have to say this in todays world but a remote with a sleep button is the best. Can you tell what I like to do after a stressful day? You got it. I am not ashamed. Again make sure your head/neck is supported comfortably if watching from your bed.
Here's my best tip ever....Don't watch the news right before sleep we like to call that "negative boo" in our family and you got it after your TV clicks off at night you may have some negative dreams with lots of anxiety. -
ROMANCE:
Ooooh my favorite...Comfy bed, lots of candle light (we all look better this way), and some great music, not necessarily soothing, ha! Okay, I am not going any further on this one.
Just remember to blow out your candles before falling asleep please! -
WORKING:
I really hope that no one has to have their computer and other work in their bedroom. This causes a lot of distractions and it's really hard to unwind at the end of the day when you know your email is right there and you just have to do that one more thing before falling asleep...Good luck with falling asleep SOUNDLY.
If you aren't sleeping well and you have your office in your bedroom this is probably the culprit. If you have to have it in there, try closing it up in an armoire or turning everything OFF so it's not as easy to wake up in the middle of the night to check something. It can WAIT! So can your cell phone for that matter. -
WINDOW COVERINGS:
Too Bright? Black out shades help, especially if the sun is in your room first thing every morning, but be careful to not over sleep. You can layer these or even better yet have them sewn into the back of your drapes, like at hotels.
Too Dark? Program a light in the room to come on at a particular time each day. (I don't know anyone who has this problem). -
TEMPERATURE:
Too Hot? Consider adding a ceiling fan to keep the air moving. These are rather inexpensive to add and really make a big difference. Keep your shades closed during the hot days and open up windows on the cool days.
Too Cold? I personally don't like heat blowing on me and instead lots of super comfy blankets or a comforter. Have extras at the end of the bed in case you do get chilled in the middle of the night you don't have to pop out of bed to find one, it'll be right there. -
GET RID OF CLUTTER!
If you aren't using it and it doesn't belong in the bedroom take it out. I can't tell you how many times I have seen disregarded treadmills or some other reminder that you need to get in shape left in bedrooms so get them out of there for your sake....Consider either moving it to another room in the house or get rid of it.
Subconsciously the stress of having it in your room, neglected, will cause an unrestful sleep.
Added benefit...If you aren't using it, I bet there are clothes hanging on it somewhere right? Get rid of the clutter.....
Layering Your Windows
Hard & Soft Combined

Nowadays we can satisfy the functional need for privacy and light control in decorative and beautiful ways by combining two or more window fashions to create layers of visual excitement!
Hard treatments such as shades, blinds, shutters and window films are often combined with soft fashions such as sheers, drapery panels and valances to create window covering layers. Each layer serves a distinct purpose and provides an opportunity to enhance the window and achieve the desired design objective.
Since we are on the bedroom lens let's shed a little light on the blackout layer...The purpose of the blackout layer is to eliminate sunlight and darken the room. They are often used in bedrooms or home theaters and on western and southern exposed windows, they can be soft or hard window fashions.
Hard treatments for blackout options include shades, blinds and shutters as well as blackout mesh fabrics used as an automated roller shade.
Soft treatment options are draperies with a blackout lining in fabric.
Layering always adds a nice rich feeling to your windows and provides a privacy level that most people want to achieve in their bedrooms.

Furniture & Bedding
- Charles P Rogers
- America´s oldest source for beds, including brass, wood, leather and iron beds, sleigh beds, daybeds, trundle beds, canopy and platform beds, plus elegant bedding made of Egyptian cotton & European linen.
I love this company and their products. I personally think they make some of the best beds out there. - Overstock
- i haven't ever purchased from this company but I am always intrigued. I think it's worth looking at and I have heard that their shipping is very inexpensive as well.
- Peacock Alley
- Every towel, sheet and sham exudes a sense of indulgence, a sense of creating a personal haven and place of comfort. From glamorous lustre to earthy texture, the Peacock Alley story speaks to anyone hoping to express their sense of self in their surroundings.
- TJ Maxx
- TJ.'s has the same stuff found in upscale home stores right now for up to 50% less. So your resolution to shop smarter can coexist with the one to enjoy your home more. Their website doesn't do it justice and inventory ebbs and flows so check back often.
If you are lucky enough to have a Home Goods store, TJ Maxx's sister store, enjoy it, they have even more inventory than your standard TJ Maxx. - Tuesday Morning
- Tuesday Morning offers first quality, famous maker closeout gifts on an event basis. This strategy has made Tuesday Morning the largest and most successful closeout gift chain in the United States, for 30 years running.
This is the place to buy bedding and towels. We have 5 of these stores in our city and they all have different merchandise. So if you find something you love but don't have all the pieces make sure to check out the other Tuesday Mornings in your area because you might be surprised to find them there.
What do YOU do in your bedroom?
Please take this quick poll.
I know what I do in my bedroom but of course I am curious to know what you do in yours.
Remember this....

- We've been in our house for over two years and still have not decorated our bedroom. I think it's the hardest room in the house to get to! Thanks for the tips and the pictures - it got my mind rolling! Best of luck to you.

Bring Good Things To Light
Lighting is a detail that can't be forgotten. You can create a lighting plan based on the individual areas of your bedroom and tailor each style of lighting to fit a particular function. For example, you'll want brighter lighting in the closet and bathroom to aid in dressing and grooming, but the more restful areas of the room call for softness and layered lighting.
Track and can lighting are both still popular trends with remodelers and both can utilize a dimmer to brighten or soften the light to suit your mood. Decorative lamps on either side of the bed also bring in a sense of style and create a perfect space for bedtime reading.
Don't forget to include window treatments when deciding on your bedrooms lighting scheme. If you like to sleep in or need total darkness to sleep deeply, a set of blackout curtains might do the trick. On the other hand, if you love waking up with the sun, consider lighter colored draperies and sheers.

It seems like everyone always has questions or need some level of help in their own personal remodels. Are you one of them? Do you want fast, affordable, professional decorating advice before you tackle your next room?
Decorator On Demand is designed especially for you.

Enjoy the satisfaction of professionally decorating your home yourself. Get professional, unbiased advice and a custom room design with a detailed action plan.
Save time, money and stomach acid.
Just $449 per room, a fraction of what a local Interior Designer would charge.
So we work as a team.....I create the "Concept" and you make it a "Reality"!
This works for all of you who have angst about "next steps" or are scared about what to do or how to get started.
All I need to start this process from you are some pics, measurements and my "Get To Know My Room" questionnaire filled out for us to start. I go to work from there putting together an actionable/detailed plan, 90% of the time with links to national retailers for furnishing needs so you get the "idea" of what I am conveying to you. A lot of times my clients end up buying that furniture but you aren't obligated at all, I make no money on those.
My design recommendation covers all aspects of the room, ie: flooring, paint choices, furnishings, window treatments.
Email is great isn't it? That is the way I communicate with all my DOD clients. I am fast with my recommendation and then I allow you to have me for a day of back and forth email if you have any questions to make sure you are completely comfortable with the plan for you to execute.
I have been doing this for almost 5 years now and this concept works. At the end of the day, my intention of starting this company was to help you and so I want you happy and satisfied.
So come check out my website and if you have any questions please feel free to email me as well.
