Bedwetting Diapers May Not Be The Solution

Bedwetting diapers and pull-ups are contriversial among parents and doctors when discussing treatments for bedwetting at night. Most agree that if the child is still very young (yonger than 5-6) then this is not a significant problem and bedwetting diapers are an acceptable solution.

Generally, a diaper is not recommended by doctors for children, teenagers or adults since they are actually not addressing the main problem of bedwetting itself. It's simply a tool to keep the sheets dry. In some cases, bedwetting diapers can increase self confidence of a teen or a school aged child since it will keep the bed dry and there will be no need for constantly changing the sheets every day.

There are many kinds and types of bedwetting diapers and I will do my best to explain these on this site and direct you to the ones that suit you best.

Bedwetting Diapers - Should You Get Disposable Or Cloth

Asking people for advice on bedwetting diapers sometimes feels like talking about religion. People have strong views!

Bedwetting diapers come in two categories. In one there are diapers that are made from absorbend cotton and in the other category are disposable diapers you can simply throw away when done using them.

In my opinion you should listen to yourself (or your child/teen) and base your decision upon that regardless of the pros and cons of each category. The fact is that what matters most it that the one using the diapers feels comfortable using it.

Most teens prefer the disposable kind since they don't want their parents to be aware of every single time they have an accident and they also don't want to bother with all the trouble of changing sheets so often (and neither do the parents).
There are some great new products on the market for bedwetting teens, these new diapers look just like regular underwear so even though the teen is staying at a friends house he does not have to worry at all about having an accident and being embarrased. These diapers are sold in all major department stores as well as online. These disposable bedwetting diapers are not as big and bulky as some of the ordinary diapers but are quite comfortable and neat.

Despite which choice you will make, both types will leak once they reach their saturation point. At that point the diaper will no longer be able to hold any more liquid so you should always be prepared to change the sheet if this happens.

Disposable diapers (such as Pullup) work in the same way as the cloth diapers. The cloth diapers use the cotton to absorb the urine but the disposable ones use paper fibers to to the same. These (disposables) tend to do better at keeping the bed dry.

In regards of the enviroment, many claim that using cloth diapers is much more eco friendly but there are also many that disagree with that claim. If you want to look more into those discussions I would recommend some internet forums for that.

Bedwetting Teenagers Feel Ashamed

Teens that have bedwetting problems are really embarrased. The first thing the teen will do is to hide the problem from everyone. Approach the problem with extra care and understanding. Talk openly about it with the teen and assure him that this is just like having any other illness and that it can be cured like any other illness.

Cover All Your Bases

My first bit of wisdom is to be prepared. Use a rubber sheet on any bed that your child might sleep in. Also, there are both girl pull ups and boy pull ups in larger sizes that can get everybody through the night with a minimal loss of sleep. Of course, you will need to take your child's feelings into consideration. If your 8 year old feels that a pull up diaper is just for babies, you really need to sort that out.
