History

The word "jerky" itself comes from the Ecuador Quechua term Charqui, which means "dried meat".

Today's beef jerky was invented in Ecuador. Throughout human history and culture, drying meat has been a common method employed to preserve it. By drying thinly sliced meat in the sun and wind next to a smoky fire, the meat is protected from insects which would lay eggs in the raw meat. These prehistoric methods to preserve meat for storage have been used by the Inca and many other ancient peoples, who prepared jerky from the animals they hunted or husbanded as an essential matter of need

Where can I find the best beef jerky in Australia?

Jerky is a quick and delicious snack food. High in protein. And tasty.

Double smoked, garlic or chili, you can find the best beef jerky in Australia at a small butcher shop in Stroud, New South Wales (about an hour north of Newcastle).

Made on the premises once a week, it sells out in a day or two. So you'll need to phone ahead to order some to be put aside (02) 4994 5150.

If you're passing through on the way to Gloucester, the Barringtons or heading further north stop by the shop at 56A Cowper St, Stroud NSW 2425 and pick some up (I'm hoping he starts making it a few days a week to keep up with demand) and also check out some of the other quality stock on hand. In particular the Texan Chili sausages.
