Beer Pong

Here's a compilation of information about the game of beer pong. There are many different drinking games but beer pong is an all time favorite. It takes some good hand eye coordination to master it, but anybody can get lucky and win.

Here you will learn what beer pong is, how to play beer pong, and what you need to play beer pong, as well as some other useful links dedicated to the game. Also, this is for entertainment purposes only. I DO NOT condone underage drinking.

What is Beer Pong?

Beer pong is the most famous drinking game of all time. It is played in college universities, in homes, tailgaiting parties, and teenage kids' basements. Some colleges and bars have outlawed the play of the game or the selling of beer pong specific merchandise (custom tables for example), as many believe it contributes to underage drinking. Its origins are thought to be a spin-off of Dartmouth College's Pong, another paddle-less drinking game. Beer pong is sometimes also called "Beirut", which is more of a regional term. Beer pong is an easy game to learn and play and unless the players are extremely inebriated, it takes less than a half hour to play. The game is meant to be just fun, though some people take it very seriously. Believe it or not, there is a World Series of Beer Pong with official rules and regulations (pdf). There is also a documentary out called Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong. Budweiser, who is excellent at targeting advertising locally via neon Budweiser bar signs, sports memorabilia, and various local sponsorships, marketed Bud Pong kits to distribute to bars (not to college campuses).

How is Beer Pong Played?

There are many different ways to play beer pong, so almost all of the below can be changed or customized as the players see fit. It is after all just for fun.

Two teams of 2 face each other on opposite sides of a table. On the table in front of each team are several plastic cups typically aligned in a triangle formation. Each cup has beer in it. The two teams take turns and try to throw or bounce a ping pong ball into the opposite team's cups.

The object of the game is to sink the ping pong ball into the other team's cups faster than they sink the ball into yours. The reason is because after each time the ball is sunk into a plastic cup, the defending team must drink the contents of that cup. When all of one team's cups are empty, the defending team must drink the remainder of the winning team's cups as well.

Different players allow different rules such as swiping ping pong balls at certain times or re-racking or re-forming the remaining cups. Many times there is also a shutout rule where if the losing team does not score at all, they have to drink much more or perform other drinking games stunts. Additionally players play with a rule that if both players of a team both sink their ball that they get to shoot again. There are also two additional cups filled with water to dunk dirty ping pong balls (they don't really clean them properly though).

Beer Pong Supplies

Here are the supplies you'll need for ping pong.

Beer- Some say to use light beer. That's up to you. Note you don't actually fill the cups full with beer, you typically use a couple of cans of beer spread out throughout the cups per side.

Table- Any old longer table.

Plastic cups- Dixie cups work fine. They say use 22 of them. That sounds good to me.
