Guitar playing and learning tips

To help beginner guitar players around the world get the most out of their efforts to learn how to play guitar.

So, beginner guitar player, Glad to meet you! May I help you?

Take a look at the lens, and please, vote on the stars at the top of the page.

Once upon a time, I was a guitar beginner, too.

50 years of guitar playing and teaching gave me a lot of knowledge and experiences to share.

Recalling the old days when I wandered how difficult would it be to learn how to play guitar, I could guess, later now, how a beginner feels, when he or she holds, for the first time, a guitar in playing position.

When I started, years later, to teach guitar, I could discover, in the beginners, those same fears, doubts and desires that I had felt myself, back in those beautiful beginner days.

So, I want to lead you through the steps of a simple learning process, that will give you the self-confidence you need to overcome the the fears and doubts, and fire up your desire of harnessing the art of guitar playing.

I also made many transcriptions and arrangements, for guitar of classical and Latin American folk music. I'll be posting them in my Beginner's Guitar Lessons Online Website. An you'll find the links to them in this lens.

Please, leave your comments and ask for topics you want covered on this page.

So, again, you're warmly welcome!

Easy Guitar Lessons Tips

Short advices to help you get the most out of your guitar playing.

Guitar Lessons Tip #1: Fine tune your guitar

After you did a rough tuning of your guitar, you must check the tuning accuracy of all six strings.

There are many ways you can do that.

One way is to check each open string with a 12th fret harmonic sound.

Guitar Lessons Tip #2: A bad tuned guitar is a bad thing

Never practice or play with a badly tuned guitar.

That way you'll never get your ear correctly trained for the right tuning, and you'll lose so much of the beautiful content of the song you're playing.

Guitar Lessons Tip #3: Is yours a good sound?

Every time you take a guitar in your hands, every time you get a sound out of it, you must focus on sound quality.

Beginners tend to think more about speed. Don't make that mistake. You get quality sound first, then think about speed; it will come with practice.

Guitar Lessons Tip #4: Plucking the right way

Plucking is a skill which every beginner guitar player should pay special attention to.

The most common mistake everybody does is moving the wrist and/or the arm, not the fingers, to pluck strings.

Your hand and arm must rest almost motionless (though relaxed), and you must pluck strings only moving your fingers.

It requires some practice, but it's a habit you should master.

Guitar Lessons Tip #5: What about strumming?

Strumming is, instead, other story.

When strumming you can move your right hand pivoting with a movement from the wrist (not moving the arm), or you can shake your arm and hand (from the elbow).

With the first movement your fingers will commonly not strum all six strings. Sometimes that could produce an interesting sound effect.

The second movement will normally cause your fingers strum all six strings.

You should master both types of movement, and use them to get sound effects that will enhance your performance.

Guitar Lessons Tip #6: You'd better meet them

Diversify your guitar learning and playing.

You'll find easy exercises or studies composed by famous guitarists from the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, very easy to learn and play.

You'll discover that they are very charming.

Go tray them!

Guitar Lessons Tip #7: Who're they?

About the composers mentioned in the previous tip, let's write down some names:

- Francisco Tarrega
- Fernando Sor (or Sors)
- Ferdinando Carulli
- Mauro Giuliani
- Robert de Visee
- Dionisio Aguado

There are many others, whose names I'll give you in a next rip.

See you there!

Guitar Lessons Tip #8: And they?

Here are another great guitar players, teachers and composers:

- Mateo Carcassi
- Antonio Cano
- Dionisio Aguado
- Napoleon Coste

We´ll be uploading some exercises by these famous composers.

See you soon!

Guitar Lessons Tip #9: How are you fretting?

In the first stages of your learning process, never forget to fret strings with a perpendicular position of your left hand fingers end pahalange.

This way it will always be easier to get clean sounds from the strings of your guitar.

Guitar Lessons Tip #10: Do you really practice?

When you do your practice, you may be tempted to play just what you like, and not what you must. Be careful not to fool yourself. You certainly can play what you like, but also play your exercises. There's no other way to success.

Guitar Lessons Tip #11: Whom to play with?

Play with yourself. Yes, play guitar with yourself. Record yourself while you're playing a song or an exercise. Then listen very carefully to the recorded music, trying to find everything you didn't do well. Then listen again and play along with the record the same song or exercise. I guarantee you that you'll learn a lot out of it.

Guitar Lessons Tip #12: Don't leave them out!

As you make progress in your guitar playing, and you start feeling that you play better, don´t stop playing those old first exercises. Keep playing them focusing on things like a different sound type or quality, another left or right hand fingering whenever possible, etc.

Playing guitar advice 1

About body and guitar positions

When learning to play guitar, a beginner is usually taught that there is a unique classic standard perfect body and instrument

position (with the guitar supported by the left leg resting on a five-six inches little stool)

Personally, I don't think that there should be only one standard perfect position, though, I must admit, that classic position is the one that commonly delivers the best results.

The student should try a few different body and instrument positions, to find the best one that fits his/her body characteristics.
