Beginning Guitar Lessons

Beginner guitar students will often start off with a lot of passion for the instrument. "I want to learn how to play like Santana, and I want to learn RIGHT NOW!!" They end up starting off their guitar studies like a rocket, playing for many hours and immersing themselves in guitar practice. But eventually, all beginners will hit that wall where the results don't seem to come as fast. No matter how much you try to force it, your fingers and muscles will simply not become guitar experts in a short amount of time. Make sure you start your journey toward guitar greatness with a commitment to long-term results. You will find that your improvements come in waves, with long periods of feeling disappointed in your progress in between. The key is to keep your chin up and commit to a consistent practice schedule that will help you work through the slow growth periods.

One of the worst things you can do when beginning guitar lessons is to try and fit all of your practice time in on Saturday afternoon. Your muscles and brain learn much better when they are exposed to small chunks of new material with high repitition. Instead of a 2 hour session once a week, make sure you dedicate at least 15 minutes of every day to practicing your guitar. Even if all you have time to do is run through some warm up exercises and scales, you will be reinforcing the nerve pathways and muscle memory that it takes to become a truly proficient player.

No one learns the guitar in exactly the same way. We can all follow the same regiment of scales and chords and theory, but in the end your individual guitar style will come from how you interact with and view the music in your world. Be open to listening to musical styles you might not normally enjoy - there are a lot of great musicians in every genre and you can learn a lot by listening to all of them.
