The branches of yoga include Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Hatha Yoga. Raja Yoga, compiled in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and known simply as yoga in the context of Hindu philosophy, is part of the Samkhya tradition. Hatha yoga has three parts: a series of exercises or movements called asana (poses or postures in English), breathing techniques of all kinds, and relaxation.
Outside India, the term yoga is typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its asanas (postures) or as a form of exercise. Someone who practices yoga or follows the yoga philosophy is called a Yogi.

For you to learn what yoga are you should know first what the real meaning of yoga is. So what is Yoga?
Yoga is present for more that 3,000 years and originated from the land of India. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "yuj," which means to bind, join, attach and yoke. This also means "union, to direct and concentrate one's attention on, to use and apply."
In other words, yoga is about concentrating on your mind and body to bind you to God.
It's about disciplining yourself to balance your mind, soul, and emotions, so that you can connect with your individual spirit or your "jivatma", which is in turn part of the Supreme Universal Spirit or the "Paramatma," a.k.a. God.
It's about focusing your energy into constructive channels. And the name of an individual who follows the teachings of yoga is known as a "yogi."
Yoga is a very diverse practice, no matter which school you choose. People young and old can gain many benefits from regular yoga practices, and asanas can be adjusted to fit physical limitations and other complications.

Raja Yoga: Raja Yoga aims for liberation through meditation. Raja Yoga is recommended only for those people who are capable of intense concentration.
Bhakti Yoga: Bhakti Yoga is commonly known as devotional yoga. Bhakti Yoga focuses on self-surrender in the face of the divine.
Mantra Yoga:Mantra Yoga is typically referred to as the "yoga of potent sound." Mantra Yoga aims at liberation through the verbal or mental repetition of empowered sounds, such as "om," "hum," or "ram."

Ashtanga Yoga Background

The text of this article was handed down to Sri T. Krishnamacharya by his teacher Rama Mohan Brahmachari
in the early 1900's. It later came into the possession of Pattabhi Jois when he studied with Krishnamacharya
beginning in 1927. Jois has been teaching this type of yoga since 1948 from his yoga shala.
The literal meaning of Ashtanga Yoga is "eight-limbed" yoga as put forth by sage Patanjali. According to him, the path of internal cleansing in order to reveal the universal self is based on the following eight spiritual practices:
- Yama which are moral codes
- Niyama which is based on study and self-purification
- Asana or posture
- Pranayama which is controlled breathing
- Pratyahara which is sense control
- Dharana which is concentration
- Dhyana which is meditation and
- Samadhi which is contemplation

The Role of Meditation in Yoga
When it comes to meditation, different techniques are used depending upon the discipline and beliefs of the individual. Many religions have developed their own method and technique of meditation that allows their adherents to arrive at a higher state of consciousness.The differences of the techniques used may be classified according to their focus. The Surat Shabd Yoga uses both light and sound in their meditation practice. The Bhakti Yoga also uses meditation, and focuses that meditation upon an object of love or devotion. The Japa Yoga practices a form of meditation in which a mantra is repeated aloud or silently. Hatha Yoga employs different postures and positions -- these are used in order to raise one's spiritual energy.
In Hinduism, the object of meditation is to achieve a calm state of mind. In the Yoga Sutras, there are five different states of mind being described. There is the Ksipta, which describes an agitated state of mind that is unable to think listen or remain quiet. Then there is the Mudha, a state of mind where no information seems to reach into the brain. The Viksipta is considered as a higher state of mind where information may reach the mind but it is not able to process it. In this state, the mind moves from one thought to another and in a confused inner speech.
The Ekagra is another higher state of the mind characterized by calmness but not asleep. This state allows a person to stay focused and pay attention. The highest state that a mind can achieve is in Nurodha where the mind is no longer disturbed by erratic thoughts and is completely focused and totally centered in what a person is doing.
