Playing Fingerstyle.... One Guitar Can Sound Like Three !!

If you already know how to play the guitar or at least know some of the basic chords and strumming, you can learn to play fingerstyle guitar. There is no need for expensive lessons. What you do need is desire, patience and to watch someone else do it. If you have never played guitar and are considering lessons, you have the options of private lessons with a local teacher which average about $25.00 per 1/2 hour, or lessons on line which are less expensive and allow you to work at your own convenience and pace. ( Not around when I was learning !)

Fingerstyle is basically playing the baseline, rythym, and melody,......all at the same time! What the heck..........?

My introduction to fingerstyle picking came when I was a kid taking music lessons at the local music studio. I had a teacher who taught me the basics and how to read music. Then I heard Chet Atkins play and I was amazed. It sounded like there were at least two or three guitars playing along with him. I asked my guitar teacher if he could show me how to play like that .....he couldn't ! He had now idea how Chet made all those sounds. So,....I decided I learned all I could from him, and what ever else I wanted to learn was up to me. End of lessons!
I bought a Chet Atkins record album ( one of those great big round kind ! ) and played it over and over until I heard the basics of fingerstyle. My first song was
called "Freight Train" It incorporated the basic thumb baseline picking, but was slow enough for me to actually hear the notes he was playing. ( We had no videos to watch back then !) HUH ?...... It was slow at first, but I got better and better as I practiced.

Playing fingerstyle is unique and difficult at first because in order to do this all the fingers on the right hand have to operate independantly and yet all-together. Make Sense ??? Not to mention you still have to play the notes with the left hand. Kinda like playing the piano.....on the guitar!

For example, the thumb which plays the base line has to pick totally alone while the other fingers do their own thing.

Let me tell you, that thumb has a mind of it's own and does not want to do what you want it to.

It has to be trained and that requires practice. Lot's of it!

Remember these videos are for those who already know basic chords and notes and not designed as a beginning guitar lesson.

Since you can best appreciate fingerstyle guitar by watching, most of this lens contains videos of some of the best pickers, some basic instructions as well as some of the new younger players. Make sure you check out the little guy at the end !

Enjoy The Music!

Freight Train...An Easy Intro To Fingerstyle Playing

This video gives you a view for both hands

This is the song I first learned playing fingerstyle. This video is an excellent first step because it shows the picking for both hands at the same time. My advice is to follow along and stop and start the video as many times as you need playing a few notes at a time. Once you get the thumb co-ordinated with the rest of the fingers, the music will come. Most fingerstyle pickers use a thumb pick because it's naturally easier to strike the strings using it. But many use just the thumb without a pick. Try it both ways to see which is more comfortable for you. Remember, have patience. You'll get it !

Tommy Emmanuel from "Down Under"

He's Amazing!

In my opinion Tommy is the best fingerstyle picker around. He's also a good showman and looks like he is really having fun on stage, even when he is giving a lesson. In the video he shows the first step to fingerstyle guitar. He primarily plays a steel string flat top guitar. Some look pretty worn, but he sure can play 'em.
Make sure you watch the Classical Gas medley. Tommy adds his own unique sound to every song he plays.

The Best Way To Learn Is By Watching

Step One.....The Thumb !

You can read all the music books and listen to all the cd's in the world, but the best way to learn fingerstyle picking is by watching someone else do it and then give it a try yourself.
Tommy Emmanuel also has a beginner's video on how to get that thumb moving the right way. Watch and listen !

Doyle Dykes .....One of the Best!

Now that you have the basic lesson, check out what fingerstyle really sounds like!

I was lucky enough to see Doyle Dykes in person and he gets a great sound out of a Taylor T5 guitar. He is a Taylor Guitar promoter and uses several different kinds in his concerts. If he ever comes to your area, it's worth the ride to hear him play. He tends to play a lot of churches, so be on the look out.

What A Cool Sound !....Give It A Try

Although several fingerpickers are good at this, again Tommy Emmanuel is one of the best. This is an excellent video showing how it's done. Once you learn it, you can add it to your own unique sound.

Tommy Emmanuel & Doyle Dykes Together !

If there are any better, let me know!

Although these two are the best, they each have different styles. But put them together, and you can see how they compliment each other ! This video isn't the best quality, but.....you get the idea !

And of Course.......The Great Chet Atkins!

One of the Pioneers......Nuff Said!

For most of us that love fingerstyle guitar, Chet was our inspiration. Although sadly, he is no longer with us, he will live forever through the younger players who will always keep his style of playng alive. Watch him play Stars and Stripes Forever. His fingers seem to move automatically with no effort. Chet played a Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar quite a bit, but here he plays a nylon string classical style guitar. Make's no difference what he plays.....he's great!

Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed

A Dangerous Duo !

Chet enjoyed teaming up with other guitar players. From rock to jazz, he played with them all. Jerry Reed was known more his TV and movie appearances, but was also an excellent fingerpicker. When he played with Chet, his sense of humor made it look like they sure were hav'in fun. Sadly Jerry is no longer with us either. Here's ...."Jerry's Breakdown" Chet's playing the Gretch Country Gentleman.

Give It A Try.......and Don't Give Up !

Practice Practice Practice!!!

Although I learned fingerstyle on my own, as do most guitar players, I did play the guitar before I started fingerstyle picking. If your new to the guitar or just trying to decide if you want to learn, it's wise to take some lessons. Whether at a local studio or on line, learning the basic notes and chords is essential. Remember, go slow and don't get frustrated. You'll practice and practice and as they say, "bam" !!! One day it just all seems to come together.

The Younger Generation ........Not Bad !!!

A Future Star ? Philip Whybra.... Keep an Eye on Him!

It's nice to see young guitar players interested in keeping the fingerstyle way of playing alive. Most young players want to go right to playing rock guitar and pass up the opportunity to learn something new.

A Word About Guitar Lessons !

Make Sure You Get What You Want.

If you have opted to take your lessons from a studio or private instructor, be sure he or she can play the type of music you are interested in. What ever style guitar you enjoy, make sure the teacher is able to play it! If you are strictly interested in rock, make sure that is your instructors specialty. If you prefer jazz or fingerstyle, again, make sure they can play. Once you begin to learn notes and chords, you are going to want to play the style you enjoy the most or it won't be fun.

Before you commit to anything, don't be afraid to ask your instructor to play for you....not just notes, but a whole song! For $40 or $50 per hour, make sure you get your money's worth. Also don't hesite to ask for a trial period period. Don't lock yourself in to any long term commitments only to find out, you don't get along with the teacher. Remember, there are a lot of good guitar players out there, but they are not all good teachers!

Keep Strummin!
