Beginner Quilting - How to Choose Your First Quilting Book
There are tons of books out there for those beginning quilting. How do you know which one is the best? After all, you want your first experience with quilting to be straightforward, yet yield beautiful results.
This lens will cover what to look for when choosing your first quilting book and some suggestions for that all important purchase.
Tips for Picking Your First Quilting Book
4 Questions to Ask Yourself
1.Do you like the patterns in the book?
There's no point in choosing a book where you are not excited about the patterns. I understand that beginner books are as a rule basic, but that does not mean they have to be ugly! After all, if you don't like the patterns, you will not finish the quilt.
2.Does the book include a list of supplies?
As a beginning quilter, you need to know what you need to purchase. Without a list you will be lost.
I remember having to return my first quilting kit because I found I needed a bigger mat and ruler.
3.Does the book give basic binding and quilting instructions?
If the book has the statement "quilt and bind as desired" put it back. You need to know everything step-by step.
4.Does the book have lots of pictures?
I'm a word kind of girl, but pictures can be a lifesaver when you're trying to learn quilting on your own, which, by the way, I did. So know that it is totally possible.
Quilt In A Day - Log Cabin by Eleanor Burns
One of the oldest and best loved books for beginning quilters
Eleanor Burns walks you through everything that you need to know from how to choose your fabric to how to bind your quilt. She not only gives clear instructions, there are also pictures of the tools you will need to start quilting. Plus, she includes simple quilting designs rather than sticking you with a "quilt as desired" comment.
The ample pictures included will inspire you to whip one of these quilts up in a style all your own.
Start Quilting with Alex Anderson by Alex Anderson
Six, small projects for beginning quilters
If you want to learn how to piece a variety of blocks, this is your book. It is like a sampler for beginners. In addition, her color choices take the simplest patterns and make them look impressive.
With this book, you will not have to guess about anything. In fact, its subtitle is Six Projects for First-Time Quilters.
90 Minute Quilts: 15+ Projects You Can Make in an Afternoon By Meryl Ann Butler
This book is destined to be a classic for beginning quilters
The patterns of this quilting book are all based on the square. The smallest project is a pillow, which can be finished in a day by a beginning quilter. The largest project is a throw. There are even projects for games.
The spiral binding makes it easy to refer to while you are working on your projects.

Hi, this is a great lens. I just randomly bought my quilting books and now have a little collection. I seem to have learned the most about quilting through blogs. I just started and really enjoy the process (and final product). I have only completed one, but I have another in a sandwich and one still in pieces. It's such a fun and rewarding hobby!! Great lens. 5*s
