Discipline without Stress Punishment or Rewards

Teaching Children Responsibility

Our school began using the "Raise Responsibility" discipline system pioneered by Marvin Marshall four years ago. It has been a process of teaching the staff and the children the language that is used in this system as well as the expectations. The system tries to teach children that in a civilized society people do the "Right Thing" because it's the "Right thing to do."

The Book.....

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal:
A blending of three subject fields: education, parenting, and personal growth this work is replete with helpful suggestions that show both teachers and parents how to heighten positive thinking in school or at home, give students and other family members the power to choose, and discover productive means of reflection and self-evaluation. For the past seven years, Marshall has been giving seminars on "The Raise Responsibility System," and his solid research, coupled with countless practical examples, makes this a natural and inviting read. His experience in elementary and high schools, counseling, and teacher education, plus his doctoral work in curriculum, counseling, and instruction, serve to deepen the quality of his observations and techniques. Conveniently structured into distinct yet interrelated chapters, the book can be read from start to finish or piecemeal, focusing on particular chapters of concern (e.g., reducing stress, motivating, or promoting learning). The comprehensive bibliography enables the reader to conduct further research. Highly recommended for all teachers (no matter what grade level) as well as parents (regardless of the age of the child), this is an important purchase for public, academic, and school libraries. You will find each chapter full of insights and strategies that will improve your influence and effectiveness with others."

My Original "Democracy" Rap

Click on the blue link below to hear the song!

This is a goofy "rap" song that I wrote for our school. It uses some of the characteristics of behavior that one would use while in level D. I recorded the song myself in GarageBand.

Lyrics:

I'm proud of the way I behave at school.
Without being told I use the Golden Rule.
I'm nice, I'm kind, I do the right thing.
I treat others with respect and so
Now I can sing....

(Chorus)
Democracy for you and me
Allstars know, that's the way to be!
Democracy for me and you
We do the right thing
'cuz it's the right thing to do!

I follow directions. I know all the rules.
If we all do this, we'll have an awesome school.
We'll work together everyday.
We'll work together, so now we can say...

(Repeat Chorus)

We're proud of the way we behave at school.
Without being told, we use the Golden Rule.
We're nice, we're kind, we do the right thing.
We treat others with respect and so
Now we can sing...

(repeat chorus)

Democracy is the way to be!
