I see people like you across the desk every day and rate them on how well they answer these questions. Study the material below, prepare and practice your repsonses. It will help you.

What is a Behavioural Event Interview?

A Behavioural Event Interview is style of interviewing based on the premise that past behaviours are a predictor of future behaviours.
Generally behavioural event interviews will ask you to recount a specific example or event relating to one of the competencies they are looking for. The interviewer will often start with the phrases " Tell me about a time when...." or " Can you provide me with a specific example of when you have...."
The main competencies for the job can be determined by studying the postition description. Ask for a copy if one is not provided. This will help you think of examples from you previous employment that you may be able to use. For example if the job you are going for has a customer facing component you will almost certainly be asked a question around this.
When answering a behavioural question try and kept this acronym in mind -C.A.R. - Context, Action, Result. Start by describing the context the example took place in. eg. " The situation I'm thinking of took place when I was working for ABC Corporation as a Client Services Officer. I was asked to...."
Next describe the action you took to complete the task or resolve the problem. Lastly talk about the result you were able to achieve.
Be sure to describe your role in the example - use "I" instead of "we" so that the interviewers are able to determine your role in the process.

Oddly, some of the worst interviews I've been to were in person. The very best was via telephone by a world class software development group. I expected it to be the other way around.
