Fuwa - The Mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Ranked #7,900 in Sports & Recreation, #203,543 overall

How cute are the Fuwa mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympics?

The Fuwa are adorable! There's a different one for each Olympic ring, and they have all been inspired by different aspects of Chinese culture. Their names are Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini.

Did you know that all of their names put together mean "Welcome to Beijing!"

I guess if you were lucky enough to go to the Beijing Olympic Games, then you probably heard people say "Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni!" to you when you arrived!

Beibei

Representing water sports and the Blue Olympic Ring, Beibei's costume was inspired by beautiful flowing waves of water and the symbol of prosperity; the Chinese Sturgeon fish.

Beibei's fishlike attributes are more apparent when she is participating in swimming and diving than when she is on land (check out the pictures of the pins on the right below).

Such a pretty blue... I think my favourite is the sailing pin.

Jingjing

Representing the Black Olympic Ring, Jinjing is a panda with a lotus headdress. He is best at the Olympic sports that require strength, so he excels at sports such as boxing, judo, weightlifting and wrestling.

I love pandas, those cute little bamboo eaters! On the archery pin he looks more like he's getting involved in an old wild west re-enactment. Perhaps the circling wagons could form up the Olympic rings?

Huanhuan

Huanhuan is both the Red Olympic Ring and the Olympic flame! He is the light, the warmth and the passion of the Beijing Olympics, and his area of expertise is ball sports. Now that's what I call multi-tasking!

My favourite is the Equestrian pin, but I'm not sure what the ASPCA will say when they see a flame riding a horse... Ouch! Now those are some saddle sores!

Yingying

Yingying is a Tibetan Antelope who excels at track and field events. He represents the Yellow Olympic Ring and the need to respect and take care of the Earth. The Tibetan Antelope are a protected species on the endangered list, so it's great to see their plight getting some publicity.

My favourite Yingying pin is the tennis one. He's going to smash that ball all the way back to Tibet!

Nini

Nini is a beautiful flying swallow who embodies innocence, joy and good fortune as she soars through the sky like a kite. She represents the Green Olympic Ring, and is best at gymnastic events.

Judging from the pins below, it looks like Nini's favourite is volleyball! I wonder if she prefers playing it at the beach or on a court...
