2008 Olympics Soccer - Beijing

The soccer competition actually gets underway before anything else. The men's games start on August 7th. Opening Ceremonies take place on August 8th and the rest of the events don't start until the 9th.

2008 Beijing Olympics Soccer Tournament Format

The mens game will see 16 teams competing for the gold medal. Four groups of 4 teams will play a round robin with the top 2 teams advancing to quarterfianls. The women's competition will only have 12 teams competing initially in 3 groups of 4 teams.

Mens Olympic Soccer History

The mens soccer has been an Olympic event since the 1900 games. Hungary and Great Britan have won gold three times each. The Soviet Union and Uruguay have each taken home gold once.

The following countries have captured gold once in their history: Yugoslavia , Argentina, Poland, Spain, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, France, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, and Nigeria.

Denmark, Brazil, United States, Bulgaria, Austria, Paraguay, Switzerland, Netherlands, Chile, Ghana, Japan, Norway, and West Germany have all won medals but not gotten the gold.
