I attended the 1996 Equestrian Olympics in Atlanta Georgia with three friends. It was a glorious week of Dressage! I video taped most of the rides. I got out the tape and sketched from it today. For people who don't know Dressage, it's very much like watching the grass grow. For enthusiasts, it's exhilarating! I wish they would show some of the Olympic Equestrian Events on TV! Seems like beach volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, diving and track is dominating the coverage here. THANS for the great info!! 5 stars and lensroll from me and Rita!

Thanks again for all the lovely comments everyone! :-)

The horses travel by plane, in the cargo hold on normal passenger airlines. You may have travelled with horses without even knowing it! Thanks for the question. I've added this bit of information to the "Some things you may not know about the equestrian events at the 2008 Olympics" section :-)

Jumping is so wonderful as human and horse become one! and of course we have a sport where where is no 'men's" and "women's" for human or animal. Great!

  • Kanga Aug 14, 2008 @ 11:15 pm | delete
Wow! I can't believe this is lens of the day! It's going to take a little while for me to get my head around that! How exciting!

Thanks for your kind words everyone! :-D

Gardian77 - When someone falls off on the cross country they are eliminated for safety reasons. Their score is then listed as 1000.0 for the purposes of their team, so that the team isn't completely eliminated as well. It's pretty unlikely that the team would get a medal with a score like that though!
  • EverythingMouse Aug 14, 2008 @ 10:12 pm | delete
I have always enjoyed watching equestrian events - not only because it is one of the few medals Great Britain ever gets to win!
  • bdkz Aug 14, 2008 @ 9:19 pm | delete
What a great lens! Congratulations on LOTD!
  • Gardian77 Aug 14, 2008 @ 9:11 pm | delete
PS I saw someone have a nasty fall in the Cross Country (I think it was lord killingworth?) anyway,
and then their score was 1000.0 - how does that work?

Are they then disqualified from the Dressage and Show Jumping too?

    Thanks :)

Hi Alex, the qualification procedures for the games are here. Each horse and rider combination must first satisfy the qualification criteria to be eligible to compete, and then the official body for horse sports in their country must select them on the team.

Once the games have started, there will be qualifying rounds for the dressage and show jumping that riders have to get through to reach the finals. These are usually televised (at least in part) where I live in Australia, but you might need to check your local TV guide for the Olympic coverage when they release it.

I hope I answered your question. Thanks for visiting :-)
  • Alex Jun 30, 2008 @ 7:55 pm | delete
Is there a qualifying round for the Games? If so are they televised?
