Being Gothic
Ranked #4,189 in Culture & Society, #90,015 overall
Goth...Gothness...Gothic...What is It??
So who are goths?? are they the worshippers of satan and devil, practise black magic and always think about death and draw weird, freaky, scary drawings..??
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
They are people with a different perspective towards life .different than what normal people have they just see the world in a different way..and so..are different!
But they are generally viewed as laughing stocks and are constantly nagged by other peers..making them hostile towards society but that doesnt mean they are sociopathic or haters just they dont take any interests in human affairs and society as their minds are occupied by a host of other things but once you get to know them .you will know what they actually are!!
So...Who are Goths???
Some other stuff you may like to read...
Macabre art...creepy but amazing
How to become one??(because they are cooler and different)
Many wonder this question...Unfortunately you cant!!! Goths are born that way..and the insanity and hunger which rages in their minds cannot be developed by normal people..its a given gift for the goths..of course they have to payback in terms of social unacceptibility, awkwardness and constant nagging and being center of humour and most jokes, and a lesser developed sense of humour...but still they do possess a different perspective, higher level of intellectualism, broad mindedness and other things which in some sense can be termed as modern enlightenment.. you wont look cool..rather a wannabee poser
So..am i a Goth??
i got this part from Azhrarn's work so do credit him for it..

The Awesome Dressing Sense...
~ anything black (White or any dark colors like navy blue and deep red are also popular but less common.)
~silver jewelry
~pallor (This could be because some Goths want a sort of undead look; or they want to embody the Victorian aesthetic that says pale skin is a sign of nobility; or because tanning causes skin cancer. In general, Goths view paleness as much more aesthetically pleasing than being tan, whether or not they have a reason why.)
~dyed hair (Black, very light bleached blonde, red, or purple are fairly common.)
~black and white makeup -- white foundation, black lipstick, black eyeliner
thin, plucked eyebrows or shaved off and drawn in eyebrows
~bondage and fetish fashion -- leather, PVC, latex, rubber, vinyl and bondage gear, corsets
crushed velvet or regular velvet
~poet's shirts -- a few ruffles around the cuff, the collar, and the front (They are usually white.)
~chokers -- a dog leash with spikes, a bondage collar, or a velvet ribbon tied around the neck
~ankh (Egyptian symbol for everlasting life)
~the Eye of Ra (also, Eye of Horus, an Egyptian symbol.)
~pentacle (The pentagram is a five pointed star -- a pagan symbol for fire, earth, air, water, spirit. The pentacle is basically a pentagram with a circle around it. These terms are often used synonymously. Since the pentacle is associated in some people's mind with Satanism, Goths are misunderstood as the ones practicing satanism.
~opera-style capes or cloaks
~opera length gloves, either satin or latex (shorter length gloves as well, usually vinyl)
~crosses (Christian symbolism)
~fishnet tights or shirts
~black and white horizontal striped tights like the Wicked Witch of the West
~chains (as a belt, necklace, part of the outfit, whatever)
~spikes/studs (usually attached to a leather jacket or to a collar, belt or bracelets)
~tattoos (depends on the person)
~piercings (Usually not as excessive as punks, goths might have a few piercings, if any. Tongue, nose and nipple piercings seem most common. It depends on the person.)
~pointy toed shoes, buckle boots, high heels, combat boots or Doc Martens.
~Vampire archetype -- Lestat or Louis from Anne Rice's novels The Vampire Lestat and Interview with the Vampire or a Dracula influenced look. The vampire archetype look also contains some commonalties with the vampire-free Victorian aesthetics: elaborately designed hair, ruffled shirts, long skirts, velvet, opera capes, corsets, vests. Punk archetype -- ripped tights, chains and spikes, a leather jacket, boots, ratted hair, defiant attitude. Tortured artist archetype -- a bohemian influence, wearing all black, maybe kinda beatnik, wearing sunglasses all the time, maybe a beret, thin, tired-looking, a notebook carried around at all times, can be seen reading alone in coffee shops. The tortured artist look may be a little more avant-garde, but it is not quite as clearly defined fashion-wise. It is made more by how someone acts than how they look.

Overly Exaggerated Misconceptions!!!
~Goth is a subculture based on a musical style. Not exactly...No.many get this impression because of the lyrics of most songs and the make up and style.though generally goths enjoy pianos, choirs and violins..which can be said to be influenced in music...
~All Goths listen to the same music. hmm..its likely but not always...major instruments always include pianos, choirs and violins in general
~All Goths are fixated on death. Hmm..it always seems to be like this but NO they are not always fixated on death...but rather they spend more time in wondering and thinking philosophies and reading and researching with their perspective they know more about death...and stuff related...majorly is reflected by their macabre and horror tastes
~Goths are by and large more fixated on the concept of beauty as an abstract, creative endeavors (both their own and those of historical origins) and simply trying to get ahead in a society that doesn't share their individual aesthetics, values and principals.
~All Goths drink a lot/do drugs. Not at all....they can as normal humans can...and its not like all goths drink and do drugs...its a personal choice.Goths are not all completely clean-cut, squeaky-clean sober types, but we aren't all into drugs.
~Goths don't laugh except to mock others. Not at all...goths do laugh..and i do laugh at many other things than failures of others..Just they dont like the normal sense of humour, or jokes cracked or someone being teased as always happens in this society..so they never appear to laugh..but you can see them smiling alone thinking...on a personal joke or a weird thought.
~Goths all have tattoos and piercings. Not at all...these are the works of skin goths...who pretend to be goths..its just a personal choice of opinion
~ Goths always wear a lot of makeup-. hmm...well make up is good..and not always but mostly they like the times of victorian culture aand so you see a sense of sophistication in them. Well gothic make up generally reflects nothing on their expressionless faces..and once again is a personal opinion and choice.
Some Gothic reading for pleasure
Grotesque
Are Goths Vampires??
Are goths ..vampires???Ohh...not at all..but they may bite if you get too close ;)
Actually vamps are supposed to be the darkest creatures..closer to humans..and well..lets say Goths fit the criteria perfectly...
They are mysterious, scary...and seductive..and leave an enigma around them...which make people around them.....bit uncomfortable. ;)
Some Dark stuff...for the inner goth in you
Do goths follow SATANISM??
Well...first of all what you think... its called wicca and witchcraft..and it is not worshiping the devil...but its following mother nature...and following the 5 elements is not in any ways wrong...cause they are exactly the GODS and creators of life unlike the idols what we worship in our holy places..
Imagine earth and life without these 5 elements..
Fire....no heat, no life, no oxidation and combustion in scientific terms
Water...dehydration and not even a hint of life can survive..
Air...we and all organisms need to breathe..
Earth...the place we live on..and which gives us everything...trees,plants,animals
Spirit/soul/akasha....well its is considered as the heaven or sky...someplace where the souls go and humans should look forward to it.
Are Goths real???...or wannabe freaks??

It is real...it comes from inside..

I believe Goths are superior people as compare to normal human beings. I respect them and their choice of living.
wiccachik says:
I am a goth (therefore, I am real-afterall, I exist). Firstly, I'd like to say that, while this article had some true points, the author seems to be slightly misinformed. The gothic subculture was in fact the result of the gothic rock movement, in the 1980's. Also, there are so many different kinds of goths (yes, including metal-goth or punk-goth crossovers). This article made it out to sound as though only victorian goths are real, what of the steampunkers, the rivetheads, the romantigoths, the perky goths, the dethrockers, the faerie goths and more? Furthermore, the fetish community is separate from the goth subculture, though they are closely entwined and many cross-overs exist. Finally, goths are not born, well...goth. Very rarely does a young child walk around in a corset or sporting a dog collar, pondering the morbid and macabre. Most gothic ideologies and beliefs (as well as interests and preferences) are gained through life experiences, over time. This article was somewhat inaccurate, however I truly admire the author's tolerance towards those that he/she doesn't fully understand.
WeiChuen says:
I've always been mocked for wearing dark long coats, having low sense of humor etc. and decided today to research on why is it so. I know for a fact that I am a goth, but it's a 1 in 5million, I'm starting to feel a little lonely. I've yet to see even a poser, let alone a real one who shares similar interest as I.
Katy says:
I think Gothic is Real, they are so cool n I like want to be one of them~
Tipi says:
Gotta be real, it just doesn't work for wanna be's!
Its all showbiz for their attention craving needs
filmic says:
it's 50 / 50 some of my best friends are Goths but some Goths are just posers. i'll go with SHOWBIZ just to be different (does that make me half Goth?)
