Books for the young at heart
Priceless Antique
Gray hair has appeared while much of it has gone; wrinkles pushed away the once supple and lovely skin; pearly teeth are just part of the past; full lips are now thinly compressed; the graceful back is now slightly bent; the spritely steps have slowed. Oh, the unwanted but inevitable changes have caught up with me. And why not? After all, I am sixty five years old. But these do not bother me because they make me a priceless antique. Not even cataract or retinopathy can dim the glow of my eyes; neither can time block the laughter from my lips nor the song of my heart. Why? Because I am young at heart and my spirit is free to roam and fly back to the days of my youth.

My Anti-Aging Procedure
1. Keep a secret hide-out
"I know a place where no one ever goes, there's peace and quiet, beauty and repose"...
So goes a song I learned from grade school.
"He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters"
-Psalm 23:2
Mount Data Lake Paradise
In this world of cares and tears, we need a place to unwind, to rest and relax, and replenish our spent selves. I have a place that my friends and I found long ago. Distance of time and place has not eradicated that mountain top paradise from my heart. I go there when I need to cry, commune with my Maker, or simply to refuel.
It is atop a plateau hundreds of feet above our mountain community. The path leading there is shady, with giant pine, acorn and mahogany trees on either side. The protruding roots of these trees, cushioned with pine needles and fallen leaves formed an ascending stairway. All along the way was lush vegetation. Sunflowers painted the more exposed part of the mountain with gold; hedges with cotton-white flowers made part of the slope look snow-covered, and another part boasted of pink blooms. Cala and other lilies lined the shaded areas, while orchids hang from the trees. All these made the path fragrant and beautiful. Our nostrils dilate and our throats would dry as we found it harder to breathe as we got closer to the summit. But water from pitcher plants that abound on the wayside gave us relief.
If the path was beautiful, the top was wonderful! Trees formed a circle around a wide space that old folks say was once a lake. The place looks like a pavilion. The trees curtained the dried lake which is covered by thick Johnson grass. In a circular formation are mounds of moss about 3 to 4 feet high and evenly spaced. It was like an outdoor version of the court of the "Knights of the Round Table".
Inspiration
On the west edge ridge of the plateau are lime rock formations where we used to stand and view the China Sea at the far horizon. About four miles on the northern side of the plateau are two magnificent waterfalls called Inudey Twins that cascaded powerfully down the Mount Data Cliffs. The falls pummelled the first ledge of rocks so powerfully it bounced sprays of water back to the top of the plateau. This served as a prism for the sunrays and a beautiful rainbow would arch over Mount Data.
My friends and I frolicked in the lake, climbed the trees like monkeys, and ate berries for lunch. Time was so short, and soon we had to leave our haven at four o'clock in the afternoon because the thick foliage made the place dark when the sun gets down behind the mountain peaks.
We would go home laden with acorns, cones, berries and orchids.

2. A Blessing Shared is a Blessing Doubled
A Blessing Shared
Of all the many stories I tell my grandchildren, their favourite is the Dried Lake Paradise. Maybe because I tell this particular story with genuine feelings, reliving my youth. The storyteller is a young girl once again. As I related the story time and again, I found playmates among my grandchildren. They pile pillows and pretend they were sitting on the moss mounds of Dried Lake Paradise; they roll and tumble like they were on the grassy natural pavilion; they climb the window grills like trees and twitter like birds, chirp like insects or croak like frogs. Best of all, they developed values from the story. They would surprise me with cones, flowers, sticks, beetles or other such gifts they find along the way. And they have a keener appreciation for nature.

3. Be ready to handle disappointments
The Lost Paradise
A few years ago I was invited to speak in a reunion in Mount Data. I was excited because it was a chance to visit my mountain paradise after 50 years. I almost missed the place though. Gone was the shady path. Instead, there was a concrete paved road that snaked up to the mountain top. I thought it was ugly. People were riding vehicles instead of walking.
My heart fell when I reached the top. My paradise was nowhere to be found. Instead there were rows upon rows of flowers on one side, and strawberries and vegetables on another side. There were no trees. Instead trucks loading up with produce formed a circle around the garden that stole the space of my pavilion.
The Moss Throne is Gone
Someone came to hug me. It was Mary, a dear friend from the Dried Lake. Behind her was a young girl who looked like Mary 50 years ago. I peered at Mary's face and saw not the wrinkles but the smooth face of her grandchild. After a long emotional moment, we let go of each other and she took me on a nostalgic tour. Other friends joined us. "This was where my favourite tree stood, and here was where my moss throne was. Now they are no more", I lamented.

4. Keep The Old, But Welcome The New
Paradise Regained
"If you are not in a hurry, stay the night with us. Let's make up for the lost years" invited Mary. She persuaded me. She led me to the edge of the plateau overlooking the sea. "These are the trees we used to climb, cut and turned into view deck log cabins where we rest and even sleep in at night. It is safe to come this far to the brink because of the fences. The deep ravines are no threats", explained my tour guide.I looked at the horizon where she was gazing at and saw a beautiful spectacle. The sun was a fiery ball of crimson red set against a clear blue sky streaked with pink, red, orange, gold and white clouds. The hue of the sun changed to orange and then into gold before it finally sunk into the horizon. Then suddenly the whole mountain top was aglow as electric lights were switched on. Communities below, far and near came alive with lights, like sparkling jewels scattered all around. Wow, we didn't have this before.
Mary kindled a bonfire, and together with other friends, we roasted sweet potatoes and dried fish. The smell of the burning pine wood was soothing to the nerves. It was the best dinner I had in years.
The soft golden glow of the full moon added to the magic that transported us back to the Dried Lake. We sang and giggled like the youngsters who picnicked on this plateau fifty years ago.
At dawn Mary invited me to the garden. It looked like a Christmas picture with the flowers and berries covered with frost. We walked to a spot directly facing the waterfalls. A glorious sight took my breath away. As the sun rose, the waterfalls turned into two large posts covered with dancing, multi-colored lights. But like a fairytale, the waterfalls once again became the falls when the sun rose higher than the level of the plateau.

5. Give unto them what belongs to them, while you keep what is yours.
Music for the Soul
Give Unto Them...
As we walked to pick some berries for breakfast, I told Mary, "I dearly miss the shady path we used to tread, but I confess I would not have made it up here without the road, and we would not have stayed the night without the cabins and the lights. Thank you so much for showing me the wonders I saw last night."
"I too miss our Dried Lake", said Mary. "I cried as each tree was cut down. But change is inevitable".
"Let us give them their generation's paradise", I said, pointing to her granddaughter, "but let us keep ours deeply etched in our hearts".
Back home, my young grandchildren playmates and I had a bonfire.
"Granny, please pass the marshmallows".

- Love your paradise, the kind of place I want to live ;-) also feel the anguish, I've had some favorite places torn up, torn down to make way for some ugly new thing. Afraid I can't be as charitable though; new is not always better.
