"How do you come up with all those designs?"

Hi, My name is Marissa Newman and I am a Jewelry Designer.  I have 10 years experience in my profession. I do not do "cheap" but I am committed to providing my customers with affordable jewelry of a higher caliber with more size options than you will find in your neighborhood department store.  Each piece is one-of-a-kind so you will never see your jewelry piece on anyone else!

As a designer the most often question asked of me is, "How do you come up with all of those jewelry designs?" Well a lot of factors come into play and I am going to share with you how I do it.

Sources of Inspiration

Nature, Fashion, The Beads Themselves

As an artist, I look to the colors, textures and shapes of nature to inspire my designs. Colorful flowers growing together... in contrast to the green of their stems and stalks. A sunset with it's golds, browns and reds, the blue of the ocean, the trees of the forest, rays of sunlight dancing on a lake, the beauty of the contrast between darkness and light... these provide the pallet that I use in creating my unique jewelry designs.

The beauty of hand-blown glass beads, filled with the breath and skill of the artist who created them, adds a beautiful look to the pieces that feature them. The high quality Swarovski crystals used in the designs should be chosen for their clarity, shape and beauty, as well as their integration into the overall look of the piece. You should always pay attention to current fashions and color palates of the season.

Learning Technique

If you are interested in learning how to create your own jewelry pieces, there are many reputable places that offer classes. Michael's is one of the more widespread sources for jewelry-making classes. Keep in mind though, that the internet offers access to sources of much higher quality materials to use when you are ready to strike out on your own.

Books are also an excellent source for designs and specialized techniques. Local Rock Shops often offer classes as well. You can look under "Lapidary" to find these sources of instruction, both on the Internet and in your local yellow pages.

Jewelry-making is always a "work in progress". I have refined my techniques over the past ten years and can easily see the difference in the quality and level of artistry between my early pieces and my present pieces. It takes a lot of dedication as well as inspiration to evolve from copying other's designs to creating your own.

I wish you luck on your journey into Jewelry Design.

Best Wishes,
Marissa Newman
