Happiness, Beliefs and Thoughts

I am fascinated by how our minds work, particularly how our beliefs and thoughts create our experiences of life.

I wanted to create something that may make a positive difference to peoples lives. Even if only one person finds their life improved by something on this page then I will be very pleased! If it does make a difference I would love to know why and how, so please do leave a message! And if you think that someone you know could benefit from reading this, do let them know about it.

I encourage you to keep an open mind about the things you read here. Try not to make a quick judgement. Ponder on what you read. Let it settle in your mind. Think about how you could use it to make a positive difference to your life.

Also, come back and read it again. Sometimes I read something that makes no impact on me, but if I read the same thing again months later, it really hits a spot! You may be in a different place in your mind, or things have changed for you. Favourite this lens and come back to it every now and then.

Above all make your beliefs and thoughts create the experience you really want!

My theory about Beliefs and Thoughts

The Core Beliefs you have about the world can create the thoughts you think.

The Thoughts you think lead to your behaviours and actions.

The Behaviours and Actions you execute lead to the experiences you have in life.

The Experiences you have in life lead to the quality of your life and how you feel.

How you feel and your experience feed back into strengthening your beliefs and creating new beliefs.

Example

Core Belief
The World is a bad place

Thought
If I speak to people I don't know, they may be horrible to me

Behaviour and Action
Don't speak to strangers and avoid eye contact

Experience
Don't meet new people, people don't want to know me, people avoid me

Feelings
Loneliness, unhappiness, fear

Beliefs
People are not nice, the World is a bad place

We see them as WE are.”

Beliefs

Do your beliefs empower you? What sort of thoughts are created by your beliefs?

Beliefs are like the rules we have about the world. They can define how we think the world works and how we need to operate in the world.

Beliefs also have a big affect on how we interpret our experiences. It is entirely possible to not see something that is right in front of you if you have a strong enough belief that it doesn't exist.

As French author Anais Nin said, "We do not see things as they are. We see them as we are"

Limiting Beliefs are the beliefs that hold you back from what you want in life.

For example, the belief 'I am not good at sports' could be a limiting belief to someone who wanted to be good at tennis. If the belief results in this person not wanting to try and get better at tennis then it will be limiting the person from what they want.

It's entirely possible not to see what is in front of you!

Play Devil's Advocate with your Limiting Beliefs

Belief's stay strong because they filter the information coming in. The filter only allows in information that supports the belief. In that way, more and more evidence is gathered to support the belief leading the mind to judge that it must be true.

I know someone who when the tv or radio is on he won't be paying attention, but as soon as some bad news comes on his ears prick up and he will follow every word avidly. He is taking in the bad news and storing it as evidence to support his belief that - The World is a Dangerous Place!

One way to work on changing limiting beliefs is to play Devil's Advocate with them.

To do this you argue strongly against your belief being true. So with the belief above - The World is a Dangerous Place - you would strongly argue that the World is actually not a Dangerous Place. In this case, search for as much evidence as possible to support this opposing view. You might look for news articles, stories and video clips that show the World to be a safe place.

In this way, you can start to chip away at the belief, reduce the strength of it and replace it with a more empowering belief.
