Bravo Clara! The courage to partake in this cause REALLY moved me. Nice to know you are Canadian.

I too, have battled depression and I have suffered greatly within my career because I disclosed it. (My lens 'Not good enough - as is', speaks about this, click on the link provided). Sadly, the poll I featured within that lens, so far 50% of respondents voted YES to my question: 'Have you experienced unfair treatment because of your mental or emotional condition?'
For clarity, since I've read studies going back some 15 years, my findings revealed that 1 in 4 people will experience some form of mental illness within their lifetime. However, in these commercials (more updated research, I'm guessing) the Canadian Institute of Health Research estimates that 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a form of mental illness at some point in their lives.
Either way, between 20 - 25% of the people we all know will be or are suffering. Many are suffering in silence. It needs to end.
Why? Because untreated it can lead to death (by suicide) amongst a whole host of unfair stigmas, prejudices, job loss, discrimination and so on. It is truly something that is as real as a broken leg. It IS based in brain chemistry (the Mayo Clinic having done MRI's to show differences in brain chemistry). Some people are born genetically predisposed to it too, scientists are discovering. It is not a weakness, not something to be ashamed of, not something one can 'just snap out of' and NOT any form of self-pity. It is BEYOND someone's control, believe me, no one 'asks' for this condition. Personally, I would rather have something physically wrong with me than emotionally (because of the false assumptions and treatment that I have received from those uneducated about depression).
Lastly and most importantly, it is one of the most highly treatable conditions and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Proud of Bell Canada
Bell Canada launched this unprecedented 5-year, 50 million dollar initiative on September 21st 2010. It will support a wide range of programs all over Canada that will promote awareness, treatment, understanding, research and access to care in remote communities.
Bell Canada responded:
"Thank you Rose. I'll pass this on to our team."

- Well done for great exposure of a serious problem. Modern society either makes it more prevalent or more disastrous (or both?).

- I decided to take your quiz and I got a trophy for having taken 10 quizzes. I admit I am not a fan of quizzes, but yours was a good one! I had to look at this lens since I had no idea what bell let's talk day was :) I'm glad to read that it is in support of mental illness.

- Depression is often not taken seriously because it is a mental illness and not very obvious. Victims of depression are often lonely and hesitant to share their experiences. Counseling and talking will help them let go so that the magnitude of suffering does not multiply. We all are subjected to various degree of depressions in some form of other during our course of life, but it is alright to take help when it becomes too much to endure.

- Been thinking of writing about my own story Rose, it could take me a while though :) I am one of the people with a family history of depression and have lived with it most of my life. That is why I can understand you saying you would rather have a physical illness, people don't have a stigma towards that yet we suffer just as much if not more.
I had no idea about Bell doing this calling day, that is wonderful, way to go Bell!!!

- Oh agreed Koupie, one of the most hurtful things people have said to me is, 'you are just feeling sorry for yourself.' Or the, 'come on, snap out of it.' Medication and therapy really work, however, it takes at least 6 - 8 weeks. That IS a long time to suffer. . .but having been there myself, I have recognized depression in many patients. What saddens me is the 'shame' patients feel (often with their head down) and they say to me quietly, "I'm on an antidpressant . . ." I look them square in the eyes and make a point of saying, "It's okay." I often feel like telling them, "I am too."
