Twilight Cupcakes with a Bella New Moon Party Theme!
Learn how to make Bella cupcakes with a Gerbera Daisy Cake theme, based on Bella's stunning birthday cake in the Twilight New Moon film. Use this simple recipe and cupcake decorating tutorial to create perfect Twilight cupcakes for a Twilight party or simply for a yummy treat!
This lens shows you how to make miniature versions of Bella's wonderful New Moon cake. Perfect if you want to recreate the look of Bella's birthday party but don't fancy your chances at making the whole cake! Or if you CAN make the cake but want something extra to add to the party table for the ultimate wow factor, why not add these as the ideal complement to the centerpiece?
The cake, made as part of the birthday party Alice Cullen throws for Bella, boasted three tiers and featured fondant stripes in varying shades of green, finished off with gerbera daisies and 'BELLA' spelled out in silver letters.
As a TwilightMom who loves to bake, I've experimented with rather a lot of Twilight-themed cupcakes (probably more than is good for my health, and definitely more than is good for my calorie-intake!!) and these have to be one of my favourite designs. Want to have a go too?

The Original Gerbera Daisy Cake
Bella's birthday cake in New Moon
In the New Moon book, Bella's party and cake theme was pink. However, the movie version changed things somewhat and revealed this stunner of a cake - green fondant stripes in three tiers with gerbera daisies and silver lettering.
If you want to know how to make this cake, you can find the decoration recipe in the article:
Twilight Cake Ideas - How to Make a Twilight Birthday Cake.
The actual movie cake was fake, but the striped icing effect was created by Thomas Haas Fine Chocolates.

Bella Cupcakes Recipe
How to Make Bella Twilight Cupcakes
- Serves: 6-12
- Prep Time: 15-20 mins
- Total Time: 30-40 mins
Makes 12 cupcakes. You will need a mixer or hand mixer, mixing bowl, spoon, baking cups, 12-hole muffin pan, rolling pin, extra flour to stop the fondant sticking to your fingers, a gerbera daisy cookie cutter or faux gerbera daisies, and silver cake letters (or make your own from craft chipboard letters)
Ingredients
- 125g softened butter
- 125g caster sugar (or superfine sugar as it is known in the US)
- 125g self-raising flour
- 2 medium size eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- Either ready-to-roll pre-colored fondant in your chosen colors (white
- varying shades of green
- and red
- yellow and/or green for the daisies. I actually used pink for the cupcakes in these pictures because I made them as part of a Bella pink party theme) OR
- White ready-to-roll fondant and gel paste coloring in your chosen shades
Instructions
1. Pre-heat the oven to 190 C (Gas Mark 5, 375 F). Line a 12-hole muffin tray with paper baking cups, ideally in green or pink.
2. First you need to beat the softened butter and the sugar together in a bowl. Now, when I first began making cupcakes I would shove all the butter and sugar in the bowl and then start beating - I have since learned that by adding the sugar little by little, you get a much lighter (and better!) sponge. So add a small amount of the sugar, start beating, and then gradually keep adding the sugar in until you have used it all.
3. Once the mixture is soft and creamy, stop to add the other ingredients. Crack the eggs into another bowl and beat briefly to mix the white and yolk, then add the two tablespoons of milk. Add this to the butter and sugar mix, along with the flour.
4. Beat again until all the ingredients have combined and you have a nice creamy batter.
5. Add a dollop of batter to each baking cup. I use an ice-cream scoop-full of batter and scrape it out with a spoon, using the back of the spoon to flatten down the tops. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the tops of the cakes spring back when lightly touched.
6. Allow to cool for a few minutes, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Do not add any toppings to the cupcakes until they have completely cooled!
Decorating the Bella Cupcakes
Step by Step

1. If you are colouring your own fondant, take a small ball of white fondant and add a drop of food colouring or a little gel. Colour the ball to the desired shade and then add to another larger ball of white fondant and combine to create your shade again. This works better than if you try and colour a large piece of fondant. If you are using pre-coloured fondant, take out the desired shades so they are ready to work with.
2. Roll out a large piece of white fondant and use a circle cookie cutter to cut out 12 circles (you want them to be the same circumference as the top of your cupcakes, or just under). Put aside.
3. Roll out a piece of one of your green shades of fondant. Use a knife and ruler to cut into strips - vary the thickness as the original gerbera cake had strips of varying width. Repeat with all your green shades, and then with white.
4. Place the strips randomly on top of your white circles. Trim the excess edges so that you have stripey circles.
5. Roll out a large piece of pink fondant. Use a gerbera daisy cutter to cut out 12 daisies. if you want, you can also roll 12 tiny balls of yellow fondant to put in the centre of each flower. Place a flower on top of each stripey circle.
NB. I made these as part of a Bella pink party theme, using pink fondant daisies and red fabric daisies. if you are staying true to the original cake, you will need to cut out flowers in red, yellow and green fondant.
6. If necessary, use a little buttercream or royal icing to help your fondant pieces stick together. Now put your final toppers on each cupcake!

How to Make the Silver Lettering for your Bella Cupcakes
You can use pre-bought silver cake lettering, or do what I did and make your own. All I did was use plain chipboard alphabets from my craft box (you'll need a B, E, two L's and an A).
1. Select your letters from a Raw Chipboard Uppercase Alphabet Set
2. Colour your chipboard letters with Adirondack Metallics Acryclic Paint Dabber in Silver and allow to dry thoroughly.
3. Leave the bottom edge plain so you can place an unpainted surface on your fondant. Alternatively, glue cocktail sticks to the backs of the letters and use as you would cupcake picks!

You can also use faux gerbera daisies, such as silk daisies or fabric craft daisies, to top the cupcakes. I have used some on these cupcakes pictured, and alternated them with the fondant daisies. You can do one or the other, or both like I did!
-
2
If these are for a birthday, you can substitute the BELLA letters for the name of the birthday boy or girl instead
-
3
You could go one step further and complete cover the entire cupcakes in fondant, with the green strips going the whole way around. You'll need to bake without cups for this version
-
4
Go even further still by making three sets of 12 cupcakes in different sizes (12 each of mini, medium and large). Cover each cupcake completely in fondant stripes as above and stack the three different sizes together to make miniature cupcake versions of the original Bella birthday cake! You could top with a fondant daisy and then scatter a few small fabric flowers or petals on the lower tiers

Cupcakes are just easier to do for something this complex. If I had pastry chef training, I'd try for the cake.
MissMerFaery says:
I'd love making both, but I do think the cupcakes are super cute, plus I think all that fondant on a three-tier cake might get a little sickly... lol!
I would attempt the original cake! It has to be done!

Making a whole cake is more fun for me.

KitchenAid KSM150PSER Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, Empire Red
Amazon Price: $288.99 (as of 05/29/2012)![]()
"KitchenAid's Artisan stand mixer is a substantial piece of equipment: 325 watts of mixing power make child's play of creaming butter, kneading dough, and whipping cream. The kid in you will appreciate how quick and easy it is to mix up a batch of cookie dough.
This model comes with three attachments: a flat beater for making batter, meat loaf, and all textures in-between; a wire whip for egg whites, mayonnaise, and more air-infused creations; and a hook for mixing and kneading yeast doughs. All three are solidly constructed and easily secured to the beater shaft with a simple twist. This model also includes a pouring shield for guiding ingredients to their proper destination, and the bowl itself locks tight to the base.
Standing about 15 inches high, jutting out a foot, and weighing more than a grown woman's bowling ball, this stand mixer isn't the sort of appliance you'll wipe down and put away. Better to find a square foot of free counter space for easy access; besides, this machine is as pretty as it is rugged--you'll want to show it off." - Amazon product description
