Bellingham, Washington "The City of Subdued Excitement"

Bellingham, Washington, is an eclectic little town.
When you live here for some time you realise the quality of life that is offered here, you find it hard to be considered  "subdued."

I guess, perhaps because we do have so much to occupy us...Mount Baker to the east, Bellingham Bay and the San Juan Islands to the right, Seattle just south of us, and beautiful B.C. just a few miles up north and a whole lot to do in between. Matter of fact, Bellingham is just a hop, skip and a jump from where the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held!

I don't know where else you can live and go skiing and sailing all in one day! Bellingham, WA is a water-lovers paradise as well as outdoor enthusiasts paradise!
It's great!

We have such a beautiful back drop of forestry around us and breath-taking scenery no matter where you go you just can not escape it! I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to, either.

The city of Bellingham has been recognized by many different publishers for various awards like, the "best paddling town in the US", "best place to retire", and "cleanest air."

We are pretty much a "green" community in more ways than one! The people all help to keep Bellingham beautiful and the greenery preserved in so much that it is not unusual to have deer cross the city streets or lay in your yard and eat your roses!

When I go out of town, I always remember that song by Journey, "Lights." I just know he was singing about Bellingham!

This lens is dedicated to the city of Bellingham and the most real and friendly people I have ever lived amongst.

Bellingham, Washington Weather

The average year around weather in Bellingham, Wa is fairly mild. Some complain that it's "too wet" with all the rain we get here, but I believe many more of us appreciate the beauty that the rain helps to bring to us all year around!
Bellingham, WA is "green" all year around in more ways than one! The weather is perfect for year around outdoor enthusiasts as well. It doesn't freeze and snow as often in Bellingham. I think it is perfect year around weather!

Bellingham, WA Protected By The San Juan Islands

Popular Attraction For Tourists

The San Juan Islands are a very popular tourist attraction in Washington. They are viewed for hours across the beautiful Bellingham Bay. There are over 450 islands off the Pacific Northwest coast and a small fraction of them are inhabited.
You will see sea puppies, dolphins and whales while exploring the beautiful San Juan Islands! If deep sea diving you will experience the largest octopus species in the world.
Click here and explore more of the San Juan Islands up close and personal! My husband and I have been on a quest to explore and write about each one of them.
You can explore them with us by clicking the link above!

You can also book a cruise around the San Juan Islands from Belliingham, WA all year around.
It's best to book your cruise or sailing expedition in Bellingham than down south. Why? It's not so conjested here and the marina is very relaxing and not far away from the best shopping in Bellingham, Wa.

The marina is walking distance from downtown Fairhaven, which is south Bellingham. Marine Park is just a 2 or 3 minute walk from the marina, too.

Exploring the San Juan Islands is one of the most popular things to do for Bellingham, WA locals as well!

Bellingham, Wa Over Looked By the Majestic Mount Baker

As you can see, the beautiful scenary around Bellingham, Wa inescapable! No matter where you go, there's Mount Baker reaching into the wonderful Washington sky and can be viewed for miles and miles away!
Mount Baker is popular play ground for many types of outdoor winter activities such as...
Skiing
Snowboarding
Cross-Country Skiing
Hiking
Camping or simply just...
Viewing!

Yes, Mount Baker is a volcano. It actually does smoke now and then. If it would come to eruption, of course, it would be devasting, however, it's lava wouldn't reach the Bellingham city limits. Bellingham would more than likely get a lot of ash depending on which way the wind was blowing at the time.

Beautiful Parks in Bellingham, Wa

Bellingham has so many parks I can't count them all on my fingers! Parks that look over Bellingham Bay, parks for sports, for picnicing, and play. What's so unique about them is that no other city in America, that I know of, that has such a large variety of parks in one small community.
I've been to them all and enjoy each one uniquely, but I would bet most of us locals favor Whatcom Falls Park. Located about in the middle of Bellingham and features a forestry blend into the city. The park has not one, not two, but many waterfalls throughout it's bountiful scenery and plentiful trails.

Bellingham, Washington Is Inspiring

I've always been amazed at all the local talent in Bellingham. Very artsy people indeed! For such a small community, there are many art galleries in Bellingham and many outdoor art displays.
Seems there are added art displays all the time around town. Bellingham is truely an art-lovers paradise!
I love the Japaneze-like garden with the creative and eye-pleasing sculptures at Bellingham's Big Rock Garden. I believe this place is one of Bellingham's "best kept secrets".

Bellingham, Wa Museums

If you are a lover of great, rich history Bellingham will be an interesting visit for you! The Whatcom Museum offers a 4 part museum that will hold the intereset of both the older prospectors as well as the capture the hearts and minds of the little ones for hours!

A part of the 4 part blend of museums is the Children's Museum that is a wonderful hands on museum. My grand daughter has been there every time she comes to visit us and she looks forward to the "new Children's Museum" that is being built today...she know's it will be even bigger and better than the "old" one!

The Radio Museum for Radio and Electicity, too, is an "electrifying" experience!

You can really spend a whole weekend just exploring all of Bellingham's museums.

Bellingham Entertainment

If having all the awe-inspiring scenary, the wonderful art and museum exhibits and lucious parks are not enough, the local Bellingham entertainment guide is to be admired as well!
The calendar always seems to be full all year around, which is really nice for those of us who like to get out and about.
One of my personal all time favorite things to do has always been dance. I love to dance. I was delighted when I moved to Bellingham to find so many places that I can go dancing in Bellingham. Dancing is truely one of my "happy places" and there are plenty places to go around town to burn up on the dance floor!
Another thing I like about the entertainment in Bellingham is that there are a lot of local, regional and "super star" bands that come to town and play in town. Bellingham is very musical and even hosts it's own Festival of Music every year!

Best Hiking Trails

One of my favorite things to do around Bellingham, Wa is to get outside and hit the hiking trails.
The city is loaded with trails. You can literally trail the whole city from north to south to east to west. That's not speaking about the miles and miles of trails around the skirts of Bellingham, either. It's truely a "hikers paradise!" Mountain biking, too, is a real popular sport. Who really knows how many miles trail on the famous Galbraith Mountain in Bellingham?
All the trails are kept up nicely.
You can find out more about some of Bellingham's hiking trails here!

I honestly believe one has never really hiked until they have hiked up to the Oyster Dome Trail. It's quite a grunt to get to the top, but the rewards of getting there is so worth it!

There are many different trails to choose from in and around Bellingham, WA, from easy to moderate to hard climbs.
