Teach Yourself The Art Of Bellydance At Home
The great news is that in an effort to educate our society about the true meaning and beautiful art of bellydance, many accomplished and professional bellydancers - including the best dancers in the world - are sharing their expertise through widely available and convenient video.
Bellydance instructional DVDs work best when the viewer has had the opportunity to take at least a few classes. Some moves are difficult to teach on video. Although I have had the opportunity to and have taken bellydance classes, I have purchased and tried a wide variety of instructional DVDs. While all of them have benefits, I've found some that are superior to others. The quality of teaching on video is not solely attributable to the instructor. Presentation and film angles have a large impact on the quality of the lesson. In other words, poorly shot video can make even the greatest teacher look bad.
The beauty of video is that it can be paused, rewound, zoomed or stopped. Class is typically over in an hour and it's sometimes difficult for the instructor to give personal attention to all students equally within that block of time. With DVDs and video, you can back up and repeat a segment as many times as you want or need. Don't get into the mindset that you have to complete the whole lesson every time. If you're tired or run out of time, you can always stop and skip ahead to the cooldown - and try it again tomorrow!
One of the greatest things about bellydance is that when you practice regularly, just when you feel like you're not getting it, your body surprises you by suddenly performing the move perfectly!
I haven't counted, but based on what I've seen I'd estimate that there are around a hundred bellydance instructional DVDs on the market. Most are great for advanced beginner and intermediate level dancers that have taken at least a few months of bellydance classes. The quality of the instruction is best measured by the ability of the beginner level dancer to learn the moves effectively.
The amazing Rachel Brice is self-taught. In my opinion, she is one of the best dancers in the world and developed her own unique style. She learned to bellydance through correspondence with Suhaila Salimpour, videotaping herself and sending the tapes to Suhaila for critique. Suhaila is now offering a correspondence course through her website, Online Bellydance Classes with Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour.
This lens highlights the best bellydance instructional DVDs for the beginner level dancer with little or no experience. I have done bellydance on DVD from both perspectives - as an absolute beginner and as an experienced dancer. I attempted to learn bellydance on my own until an instructor magically floated into my life through a free workshop at a metaphysical fair that I attended. I took classes at her studio for about eighteen months and have been dancing for four years. I performed as part of a troupe for about a year, which I really enjoyed. The other demands of life leave little time for the extra practice, so I've given it up performing and am now an aspiriing instructor. Although I can recommend DVDs based on a knowledge of the instructor, I am limiting this lens to DVDs that I have personally used. More will be added as I acquire them, so mark this lens as a favorite and visit often.
In the words of my former instructor, "Shimmy til your butt falls off!" And it will. Bellydance is specifically designed for the female body and there is virtually no impact. Practice and drills strengthen your muscles, especially the core, and improve your posture. You'll develop flexibility and strength without ever feeling like you're working out. A three minute dance burns calories and is great cardio that won't make you keel over clutching your chest. You'll feel both invigorated and relaxed at the same time - and feel absolutely beautiful! Several of the dancers in my studio lost thirty to forty pounds in less than a year without making any other changes. They simply danced their way to health, fitness and beauty. Bellydance brings out the beauty in every woman who practices it.
Sadly, most of the women I talk to about bellydance have the impression that you need to look like a model to bellydance. Not so! In fact, if you have the opportunity to attend bellydance performances locally, you might notice that the majority of dancers are average and goddess-sized. The great Rachel Brice was influenced to learn to bellydance by a dancer who weighed around 300 pounds. Bellydance improves body image by making us feel beautiful - and we become what we feel.
The movements are not just in the belly. In fact, with the exception of the bellyroll, movements focus on the legs, hips, arms, ribs and head. These movements trigger a chain reaction that ends up involving the belly. Costuming does not have to reveal the belly. The costuming for some styles of dance is actually a loose caftan. In Egypt, it is said to be illegal to bare your midriff while performing the cane dance, Raks Al Assaya.
If you're a bellydance instructor, spread the word by adding your link to the links plexo at the bottom of this lens, just above the guestbook.

An Ancient Art
The greatest misconception about belly dancing is that it is intended to entertain men.
Here in the "Bible Belt," many people equate bellydancers with strippers. When that's not the case, women respond to the mention of taking bellydance classes with comments like, "Oh, I'm too fat to "shake it."Bellydance is not even the proper name for the art. Its true name is Oriental Dance or Danse Orientale, which means "Dance of the East." It is also known as Raks Sharki, "The Dance of the Orient."
The French jokingly named it the "danse du ventre", literally meaning "dance of the belly" based upon the movements in the dancer's belly that result from the movements in the hips and legs. The term "bellydance" has been universally adopted and very few people know that it's not really the correct name for the dance.
Bellydance was first introduced to western culture at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Unfortunately, the operator of the fair's priority was not to introduce culture to the west but to make money. Saul Bloom promoted the Columbian Exposition as having "hoochie coochie" and "shimmy and shake" dances. By the way, no dancer named "Little Egypt" was recorded as having performed. The Syrian dancer's real name was Farida Mazar Spyropoulos and she was billed as Fatima. She was apparently a petite woman and was called "Little Egypt" instead. Nevertheless, her dance was a hit and other dancers adapted her name when they toured performing a variation of the dance. Spyropoulos came forward and claimed her name, and danced as Little Egypt at the 1933 Chicago Century Of Progress at the age of 62.
In ancient societies, women danced together for the sheer joy of it. As exercise, it was used to prepare women for childbirth and as a childbirth ritual.
Today, the "hoochie coochie" is associated with erotic and suggestive dance and is still erroneously associated with middle eastern dance, or bellydance. These days, every bellydancer is on a mission to educate the misinformed. In 2002, music producer Miles Copeland formed the "Bellydance Superstars and Desert Roses" amid resistance from both the mainstream dance arts and the established world of bellydance. To date, the troupe has performed elegant stage peformances in 20 countries to well over a million people in over 600 shows. In 2009, American Public Television ran the "Live at the Folies Bergere" Paris show. It is rumored that the Prime Minister loved the show so much that he attended it twice! The Bellydance Superstars, or BDSS, performances are available on DVD but I highly recommend attending a live show if you possibly can. It is absolutely mesmerizing, and you can meet the dancers in a meet and greet after each show when they graciously visit with their fans.

Styles of Bellydance Defined
I practiced Cabaret style for my first year, mainly because this is what was being taught by my instructor. I've had two back surgeries and found the quick movements and turns difficult and more likely to cause injury. I thought that Tribal style was more difficult, but when I tried it, I found that its tighter, more controlled and muscular movements were much better for my body.
Ideally, you'll want to learn about and try many styles. You'll find yours when the time is right.
Styles of Belly Dance Defined
There are a number of belly dancing styles and variations, including the classic Egyptian style, the Greek style, Turkish, Lebanese and American tribal style. Discover the differences between belly dancing styles with help from a belly dancer in this free video on styles of belly dancing.

One Small Drawback
If You Move On To Professional Instruction
After practicing at home you may find that you love bellydance so much that you seek out a teacher. As mentioned above, it is difficult both to teach and to learn from video. You may learn some of the moves incorrectly or may pick up bad habits on your own without an instructor to coach you. If you're dancing just for the sheer joy of it and have no intention of performing, don't let this stress you. You do want to always perform the dance in a safe manner and take that advice. If you have a desire to move on to performing, you'll definitely want to be corrected. Some bellydance instructors feel that its an honor for their students to dance just like they do and are simply a bit picky. Performing with a troupe does require a certain level of uniformity, but all dancers need to be encouraged to develop their own style. If you find that your instructor stresses style more than safety and form, you may want to look for someone else.

American Bellydancer
A Must Have
American Bellydancer
Amazon Price: $22.49 (as of 02/09/2010)![]()
American Bellydancer chronicles the journey of the Bellydance Superstars from Miles Copeland's vision to the struggles that he, the dancers and the bellydance community have faced. Filmed documentary-style, it gives a wealth of history through interviews with the dancers and dance historians. If you love bellydance like I do, you'll really appreciate their efforts. Life on the road is far from glamorous.
Most editions include a fabulous bonus music CD, so make sure you're getting that one.
The Basics
Bellydance! Magical Motion
This one is still my number one favorite. Very easy to learn from. Atea teaches basic shimmies, hip, chest and arm moves and encourages improvisation by having you try out what you just learned at the end of each segment. Dancers of all ages, shapes and sizes are featured. In addition, there are great segments on the history of the dance and costuming as well as a zill lesson. Well, well worth the money and the best resource for learning to dance on your own.
Kathy Smith: Flex Appeal - A Belly Dance Workout
The second one I'd recommend for absolute beginners. Despite the fact that poor Kathy is still in aerobics teacher mode, this is an excellent DVD. She took the time to consult with an expert and accomplished instructor and Bellydance Superstar, Ansuya. The workout teaches real bellydance moves and how to put them together into a dance. Ansuya teaches a short routine in a special feature at the end. With both a fast and a slow workout and Ansuya's choreography, you're getting a lot of shimmy for your buck. It's a lot of fun, too.
Bellydance - The Art of the Drum Solo
Number three. Although Sonia and Issam are teaching the art of the drum solo, all of the moves that Sonia teaches are basic moves that you need to learn to bellydance. You also need to learn and recognize the different types of drum beats and which types of moves to use with them. This DVD does it all and is highly recommended. Sonia's style of teaching is very easy for beginners who have not been previously exposed to the dance.
Tribal Fusion - Yoga Isolations & Drills for Bellydance
Number Four. This one is a little more advanced and best if you've had some instruction. Rachel Brice's style is tribal fusion but the hip work drills are beneficial for any style of bellydance. This DVD consists of all drills and no choreography, so don't expect to be dancing. Instead, you'll be building up the muscles you need for dance and perfecting your moves.
One sheer genius thing that Rachel did here is to organize her video into three different workout lengths; fifteen, thirty and forty-five minute workouts. In addition, each drill has its own chapter so you can skip around, pick your favorites or even put your own workout together. I wish that all fitness DVDs could do this.
Rachel is also a yoga teacher and yoga is extremely beneficial for bellydance. The only thing she forgot to add was clear safety instruction. This seems to be the case with most of the bellydance DVDs that include yoga. They seem to assume that everyone has some yoga experience. If you're new to yoga, take it slow. Remember to relax your knees when you come up from that forward bend! Use your legs. It also helps to squeeze your knees and thighs together and tighten your glutes.
Discover Bellydance: Basic Dance
Bellytwins" Veena and Neena have lots of videos. All of them are good, but most are much easier if you've had at least a few bellydance classes.
After trying several, I found that this one is the only one in their collection that works best for beginner level dancers. It's the right length, easy to learn from and a workout, too.
Now You're Dancin'!
Instructional Bellydance With Jillina - Level 1
Although Jillina's instruction is clear and easy to learn from, don't let the title mislead you into using this if you're an absolute beginner.
She demonstrates in front of a mirror so that you can see both the front and back views. When appropriate, she explains where the moves originate.
In this DVD, you'll learn stretching, technique and the combinations that lead to a beautiful dance, demonstrated by Jillina.
Instructional Bellydance With Jillina - Level 2
Same sequence of instruction as Level 1, but the moves and choreography are more advanced. If you've had some classes, these DVDs are intermediate level. The camera work is excellent and compliments Jillina teaching in front of a mirror.
Instructional Bellydance With Jillina, Level 3
All of Jillina's DVD's are sequenced alike: stretching/warmup, technique, combinations, choreography and performance. Level 3 builds on Levels 1 and 2.
Jillina repeats each movement several times. If you don't feel it's enough, remember that the beauty of a DVD is that you can back up and practice it again.
Jillina is an amazing dancer with a professional background, and the main choreographer of the Bellydance Superstars. If you can't attend one of her workshops, this is the next best thing.
The Goddess Workout with Dolphina - Bellydance with Veils
I didn't care much for Dolphina's other DVD's but I love this one. She gives very clear instruction and the camera work is good. Dancing with a veil is so magical, and the arm work makes it a great cardio workout as well as a great way to tone your arms.
Discover Bellydance: Mystic Dance
I tried this one before I took classes and found it difficult and confusing. I dusted it off after several months of classes and found it to be very easy and a lot of fun! I recommend this one as one of the first you try after you build some skills either through classes or self-teaching.
Shimmy on Television
Bellydance Instruction on TV
If you're timid about trying bellydance or simply can't afford DVDs in this economy, there's another alternative. I ran across Shimmy on FitTv in the middle of the night. At first I rolled my eyes. Bellydance was being taught in the snow, in something that looked like a leaky basement and in a mall or office complex. But I decided to try it and was pleasantly surprised. It does its best to cater to beginners and does a pretty good job with most of the moves. I'm impressed that the narrator and dancers involve the arms and hands in every move. My instructor didn't do as well in that area, which is very important because you need to get into that habit and coordination from the very beginning.
Bellydance is very hot in Canada, where the show originates. Compared to the way I was taught bellydance here in the US, the names used for one or two of the moves are confusing and there's one - the "M&M" - that I've never even heard before. I can best describe it as a double or front-and-back hip bounce or hip drop. No matter what it's called, it's a fun move!
With two sets of very long commercial breaks, this is really only a twenty minute workout, structured as follows:
Warmup/Stretching/Yoga
Commercial break
Technique/Combinations
Commercial break
Choreography
It initally seemed to me that there were only five or six shows because they all seemed very similar. There are actually 26 individual episodes and there is a lot of repetition, which is not a bad thing at all for beginners. It's not as good as the DVDs I've recommended, but it will definitely do. It's also a fun, quick break for the experienced dancer. Those wacky sets and backgrounds are beautiful and the photography isnt bad, although there's still a bit too much of showing the dancer's face when what we need to see are her hips, legs and feet.
Shimmy is shown in my area on FitTv, part of the Discovery Network, which I receive as part of my satellite package. Check your cable listings or visit their website to find it in your area.
All Star Workouts on FitTv also has a great bellydance episode, taught by none other than BellyDance Superstar Aubre. All Star Workouts has a constant variety of different types of workouts and it's only on the schedule about once a month. You can check the schedule by going to the individual show pages on FitTv's website.
Photo of the Bellydance Superstars is public domain to the best of my knowledge. I recognize Sonia and I think the other dancer may be Rachel Brice or Sharon Kihara.
Shimmy
Shimmy HD Television Series
In the performance section, dancers in stunning costumes and dramatic settings combine the movements just taught into an energetic and stimulating low-impact aerobic choreography designed to burn calories and help you explore your sensual side. The episode ends as the dancers take inspiration from the movements taught throught the entire series in a mesmerizing display of freestyle belly dance.

A Good Example Of Great Video Instruction
Let There Be Music
Bellydance Superstars 1
The first of six volumes of various artist albums produced by Miles Copeland. This one has the most classic and popular bellydance songs suitable for all styles of dance.
Galactic Caravan: Intergalactic Bellydance
Modern style bellydance music suitable for all styles but especially tribal style. Not just for bellydance, in my opinion - it can get anyone moving.
Bellydance Overdrive
Tabla is the drum used for bellydance, and this is Turbo Tabla - tabla on steroids! Energetic, modern music with classic drum beats that will get those hips moving!
Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms, Vol. 3
I love all the Desert Roses CD's but this one's my favorite. A collection of middle eastern artists and modern music both for dancing and for listening.
Wassan Pharaoun
Wassan Pharaoun means "Master Drummer" and as the tabla player for the Bellydance Superstars, Issam Houshan definitely deserves that title. I've met him and he's delightful as well! A must have for your drum solo practice. Works well for vacuuming, too.
Bellydance Performance
Our troupe had "DVD parties" where we got together at each other's homes and viewed each other's DVD's, a practice you and your friends might enjoy as well!
Bellydance Superstars Live in Paris at the Folies Bergere
I've watched this double DVD set a million times and never get tired of it. This live show from Paris showcases all styles of dance with the original troupe. Issam still does his fun interactive drumming with the audience today, and you'll love Dondi's take on Marilyn Monroe as a bellydancer. A must have for your library.
Bellydance Divas
The intention of the producers of this DVD was to get people interested enough in bellydance to want to buy their instructional DVDs. It's been criticized in Amazon reviews as being "unoriginal." It doesn't claim to be. It showcases and explains the different styles of bellydance and is very educational. There is nothing wrong with any of the performances. They're great and I do find them inspiring. You'll also see some very famous and accomplished dancers. It's worth buying and would be a great one for instructors to show their students.
Bellydance Superstars
The first DVD in a series, showcasing performances by my favorite bellydancers. Suhaila Salimpour, who influenced the creation of the BDSS, has never performed with them but has two great performances on this DVD. That woman has control over every molecule of her belly! Her isolations are incredible.
Gothic Bellydance - Revelations [DVD][ALL REGIONS][NTSC]
Whoa, this one is very different! I've viewed it about a hundred times. It shows what can be done when a dancer is really allowed to express herself in a performance. It claims to show the "darker" side of bellydance but not all of the performances are dark. It introduced me to dancers like Ariellah, Jeniviva and Laura Rose that I've never seen before and turned me into a fan. It includes all of the props, including a snake. Broaden your horizons and buy this one.
The Golden Apple: Bellydance Stars of New York (belly dance performances)
Another DVD that includes some alternative styles, including gothic. You'll become acquainted with what I think of as another set of Bellydance Superstars - Blanca, Neon and more as well as Jehan's incredible music. There's a bonus performance by Jehan as a special feature when she was goddess-sized and this is the only DVD I'm aware of that has featured a larger dancer. They get major kudos for that.
