Teach Yourself The Art Of Bellydance At Home

Unless you live in New York, Los Angeles, Miami or San Francisco, you probably don't have much access to formal bellydance instruction. And if you live in a rural area or a part of the country that still equates bellydancers with strippers like I do, there may be no bellydance classes in your area at all.

The great news is that in an effort to educate our society about the true meaning and beautiful art of bellydance, many accomplished and professional bellydancers - including the best dancers in the world - are sharing their expertise through widely available and convenient video.

Bellydance instructional DVDs work best when the viewer has had the opportunity to take at least a few classes. Some moves are difficult to teach on video. Although I have had the opportunity to and have taken bellydance classes, I have purchased and tried a wide variety of instructional DVDs. While all of them have benefits, I've found some that are superior to others. The quality of teaching on video is not solely attributable to the instructor. Presentation and film angles have a large impact on the quality of the lesson. In other words, poorly shot video can make even the greatest teacher look bad.

The beauty of video is that it can be paused, rewound, zoomed or stopped. Class is typically over in an hour and it's sometimes difficult for the instructor to give personal attention to all students equally within that block of time. With DVDs and video, you can back up and repeat a segment as many times as you want or need. Don't get into the mindset that you have to complete the whole lesson every time. If you're tired or run out of time, you can always stop and skip ahead to the cooldown - and try it again tomorrow!

One of the greatest things about bellydance is that when you practice regularly, just when you feel like you're not getting it, your body surprises you by suddenly performing the move perfectly!

I haven't counted, but based on what I've seen I'd estimate that there are around a hundred bellydance instructional DVDs on the market. Most are great for advanced beginner and intermediate level dancers that have taken at least a few months of bellydance classes. The quality of the instruction is best measured by the ability of the beginner level dancer to learn the moves effectively.

The amazing Rachel Brice is self-taught. In my opinion, she is one of the best dancers in the world and developed her own unique style. She learned to bellydance through correspondence with Suhaila Salimpour, videotaping herself and sending the tapes to Suhaila for critique. Suhaila is now offering a correspondence course through her website, Online Bellydance Classes with Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour.

This lens highlights the best bellydance instructional DVDs for the beginner level dancer with little or no experience. I have done bellydance on DVD from both perspectives - as an absolute beginner and as an experienced dancer. I attempted to learn bellydance on my own until an instructor magically floated into my life through a free workshop at a metaphysical fair that I attended. I took classes at her studio for about eighteen months and have been dancing for four years. I performed as part of a troupe for about a year, which I really enjoyed. The other demands of life leave little time for the extra practice, so I've given it up performing and am now an aspiriing instructor. Although I can recommend DVDs based on a knowledge of the instructor, I am limiting this lens to DVDs that I have personally used. More will be added as I acquire them, so mark this lens as a favorite and visit often.

In the words of my former instructor, "Shimmy til your butt falls off!" And it will. Bellydance is specifically designed for the female body and there is virtually no impact. Practice and drills strengthen your muscles, especially the core, and improve your posture. You'll develop flexibility and strength without ever feeling like you're working out. A three minute dance burns calories and is great cardio that won't make you keel over clutching your chest. You'll feel both invigorated and relaxed at the same time - and feel absolutely beautiful! Several of the dancers in my studio lost thirty to forty pounds in less than a year without making any other changes. They simply danced their way to health, fitness and beauty. Bellydance brings out the beauty in every woman who practices it.

Sadly, most of the women I talk to about bellydance have the impression that you need to look like a model to bellydance. Not so! In fact, if you have the opportunity to attend bellydance performances locally, you might notice that the majority of dancers are average and goddess-sized. The great Rachel Brice was influenced to learn to bellydance by a dancer who weighed around 300 pounds. Bellydance improves body image by making us feel beautiful - and we become what we feel.

The movements are not just in the belly. In fact, with the exception of the bellyroll, movements focus on the legs, hips, arms, ribs and head. These movements trigger a chain reaction that ends up involving the belly. Costuming does not have to reveal the belly. The costuming for some styles of dance is actually a loose caftan. In Egypt, it is said to be illegal to bare your midriff while performing the cane dance, Raks Al Assaya.

An Ancient Art

The greatest misconception about belly dancing is that it is intended to entertain men.

Here in the "Bible Belt," many people equate bellydancers with strippers. When that's not the case, women respond to the mention of taking bellydance classes with comments like, "Oh, I'm too fat to "shake it."

Bellydance is not even the proper name for the art. Its true name is Oriental Dance or Danse Orientale, which means "Dance of the East." It is also known as Raks Sharki, "The Dance of the Orient."

The French jokingly named it the "danse du ventre", literally meaning "dance of the belly" based upon the movements in the dancer's belly that result from the movements in the hips and legs. The term "bellydance" has been universally adopted and very few people know that it's not really the correct name for the dance.

Bellydance was first introduced to western culture at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Unfortunately, the operator of the fair's priority was not to introduce culture to the west but to make money. Saul Bloom promoted the Columbian Exposition as having "hoochie coochie" and "shimmy and shake" dances. By the way, no dancer named "Little Egypt" was recorded as having performed. The Syrian dancer's real name was Farida Mazar Spyropoulos and she was billed as Fatima. She was apparently a petite woman and was called "Little Egypt" instead. Nevertheless, her dance was a hit and other dancers adapted her name when they toured performing a variation of the dance. Spyropoulos came forward and claimed her name, and danced as Little Egypt at the 1933 Chicago Century Of Progress at the age of 62.

In ancient societies, women danced together for the sheer joy of it. As exercise, it was used to prepare women for childbirth and as a childbirth ritual.

Today, the "hoochie coochie" is associated with erotic and suggestive dance and is still erroneously associated with middle eastern dance, or bellydance. These days, every bellydancer is on a mission to educate the misinformed. In 2002, music producer Miles Copeland formed the "Bellydance Superstars and Desert Roses" amid resistance from both the mainstream dance arts and the established world of bellydance. To date, the troupe has performed elegant stage peformances in 20 countries to well over a million people in over 600 shows. In 2009, American Public Television ran the "Live at the Folies Bergere" Paris show. It is rumored that the Prime Minister loved the show so much that he attended it twice! The Bellydance Superstars, or BDSS, performances are available on DVD but I highly recommend attending a live show if you possibly can. It is absolutely mesmerizing, and you can meet the dancers in a meet and greet after each show when they graciously visit with their fans.

Styles of Bellydance Defined

There are a number of belly dancing styles and variations, including the classic Egyptian style, the Greek style, Turkish, Lebanese and American tribal style.

I practiced Cabaret style for my first year, mainly because this is what was being taught by my instructor. I've had two back surgeries and found the quick movements and turns difficult and more likely to cause injury. I thought that Tribal style was more difficult, but when I tried it, I found that its tighter, more controlled and muscular movements were much better for my body.

Ideally, you'll want to learn about and try many styles. You'll find yours when the time is right.

One Small Drawback

If You Move On To Professional Instruction

After practicing at home you may find that you love bellydance so much that you seek out a teacher. As mentioned above, it is difficult both to teach and to learn from video. You may learn some of the moves incorrectly or may pick up bad habits on your own without an instructor to coach you. If you're dancing just for the sheer joy of it and have no intention of performing, don't let this stress you. You do want to always perform the dance in a safe manner and take that advice. If you have a desire to move on to performing, you'll definitely want to be corrected.

Some bellydance instructors feel that its an honor for their students to dance just like they do and are simply a bit picky. Performing with a troupe does require a certain level of uniformity, but all dancers need to be encouraged to develop their own style. If you find that your instructor stresses style more than safety and form, you may want to look for someone else.

Shimmy on Television

Bellydance Instruction on TV

If you're timid about trying bellydance or simply can't afford DVDs in this economy, there's another alternative. I ran across Shimmy on FitTv in the middle of the night. At first I rolled my eyes. Bellydance was being taught in the snow, in something that looked like a leaky basement and in a mall or office complex.

But I decided to try it and was pleasantly surprised. It does its best to cater to beginners and does a pretty good job with most of the moves. I'm impressed that the narrator and dancers involve the arms and hands in every move. My instructor didn't do as well in that area, which is very important because you need to get into that habit and coordination from the very beginning.

Bellydance is very hot in Canada, where the show originates. Compared to the way I was taught bellydance here in the US, the names used for one or two of the moves are confusing and there's one - the "M&M" - that I've never even heard before. I can best describe it as a double or front-and-back hip bounce or hip drop. No matter what it's called, it's a fun move!

With two sets of very long commercial breaks, this is really only a twenty minute workout, structured as follows:

Warmup/Stretching/Yoga
Commercial break
Technique/Combinations
Commercial break
Choreography

It initally seemed to me that there were only five or six shows because they all seemed very similar. There are actually 26 individual episodes and there is a lot of repetition, which is not a bad thing at all for beginners. It's not as good as the DVDs I've recommended, but it will definitely do. It's also a fun, quick break for the experienced dancer. Those wacky sets and backgrounds are beautiful and the photography isnt bad, although there's still a bit too much of showing the dancer's face when what we need to see are her hips, legs and feet.

Shimmy is shown in my area on FitTv, part of the Discovery Network, which I receive as part of my satellite package. Check your cable listings or visit their website to find it in your area.

All Star Workouts on FitTv also has a great bellydance episode, taught by none other than BellyDance Superstar Aubre. All Star Workouts has a constant variety of different types of workouts and it's only on the schedule about once a month. You can check the schedule by going to the individual show pages on FitTv's website.

Bellydance Performance

Bellydance performances inspire all of us. Once I had built my skills, I found that dancing along with a DVD performance was a great companion to practicing with my instructional DVDs.

Our troupe had "DVD parties" where we got together at each other's homes and viewed each other's DVD's, a practice you and your friends might enjoy as well!
