The Duke of Orleans sent a Valentine to his French wife while he was a prisoner in the Tower of London. He sent the Valentine in 1415 A.D. It would be another hundred and twenty-two years before Valentine's Day was declared a holiday. Today teachers will receive most of the Valentine Day cards. Children, mothers and wives come next with sweethearts closing the gap on Valentine Day card recipients. Boys and girls ranging from 6-10 years will send Valentine's Day cards to teachers, classmates and family members.

Cards that became a treasure.

Esther Howland, a artist and printer, published the first American Valentine's card. Her fancy laced cards were sold for five dollars. Her most expensive cards sold for thirty-five dollars. With the invention of mass production she could no longer get these prices. Her vision helped the public's fantasies of Valentine's Day become treasured memories. Her cards represented the beauty and love of romance leading up to marriage. The cards became keep sakes. It is said that Esther Howland changed the way "love" is celebrated in America.

Did you really think I could pass up this tid-bit?

Famous cure announced on February 14, 1929 Chances are we all have received the benefits of this one.

An accidental discovery lead Sir Alexander Fleming to the discovery that would save millions of lives. This discovery is considered one of the greatest developments in modern medicine. We don't really know what caused this bacteriologist to leave a plate (more than likely a petri dish of sorts) uncovered. Upon returning to his lab he found "stuff" had fallen on this culture of staphylococcus bacteria. Not only had the substance landed on the plate but also killed some of the bacteria. The mold was identified as penicillin notatum. Penicillin was introduced as a cure for bacterial infections.
