Who Is Ben 10?

The Cartoon Network Ben 10 show has been going since 2005. The star of the show is Ben Tennyson, a 10 year old boy who, whilst on a camping trip happens to find a mysterious alien device. His life changed forever and from then on he was no ordinary kid. The alien device is the shape of a watch and is called the 'Omnitrix'. Not knowing what he was getting himself into, Ben strapped the Omnitrix to his wrist but was not able to take it off. Having attached itself to Ben, the Omnitrix then allowed him to combine his DNA with alien DNA stored within the watch to transform into super powered aliens. At the start of this whole saga, he could change into 10 unique aliens, each possessing different strengths. With this great ability, came great responsibility as it became up to Ben and has alien friends to protect the Earth from evil forces.

Due to the huge popularity of the first series, a second sequel soon followed. This is called Alien Force and has jumped forward 5 years from the original. It follows a now 15 year old Ben, whose Omnitrix has evolved during the intervening years. Alien Force will finish airing in 2010, when a third series called Evolutions will be released. Ben will be 16 years old, sporting another version of the Omnitrix but his life has been shot into the public eye when his secret identity is revealed.

Ben 10 Episodes & DVDs

The original series of Ben 10 is made up of 49 episodes split into 4 seasons of 13 each. The fourth season has only 9 normal episodes but also includes the 'Secret Of The Omnitrix' film as a finale. The four seasons are available to buy as separate DVDs or altogether in a box set.

The Alien Force sequel comprises of 3 seasons, however, each season is split further into 3 volumes, each of which can be bought on a different DVD.

Ben 10 Films

Ben 10 has one feature length animated film to his name. It is called 'Secret Of The Omnitrix' and the story line is that the Omnitrix has accidentally been set to destroy itself, so Ben has to find its original creator in order to save the day.

Following the animated film, come two live action films. 'Race Against Time' was made in 2007 and is the one that aligns itself with the original Ben 10 cartoon series. The live action film to accompany the Alien Force sequel is 'Alien Swarm' which is due for release in November 2009. Both follow Ben on yet another mission to save Earth from evil aliens.

Ben 10 Aliens

The Omnitrix enables Ben to transform into his various alien alter egos. They each have a special strength that Ben uses in different situations he encounters with the baddies. In the beginning, there were only 10 aliens, such as Grey Matter, Heatblast and XLR8. During the second season of the first series the Omnitrix gave Ben access to another 10 aliens, who are not as well known but include BenMummy, Eye Guy and Wildvine. Even more aliens were introduced during the Alien Force sequel. The newly evolved Omnitrix contained 10 new aliens such as Alien X, Big Chill and Brainstorm. There are also a few aliens that have appeared in futuristic episodes, such as Ben 10,000.

Ben 10 Villains

Ben needs his alien powers to help fight the evil that threatens Earth on many occasions. There are a few baddies that crop up with regularity during the cartoons. These are Vilgax, who is Ben's most powerful enemy. He wants to build his own army for his evil ends and thinks that taking over control of Ben's Omnitrix will help him achieve his plans more easily. The Forever Knights are a secret group whose main aim is to gather alien technology from around the galaxy. They have discovered Ben's alien abilities and have desires to control him and his Omnitrix. The Highbreed is another group of baddies who believe they are superior beings. They are an alien race who wants to remove all traces from the Universe of any race other than their own.

Ben 10 Omnitrix

The Ben 10 Omnitrix is central to the whole Ben 10 story. It is what allows him to transform into one of his many alien life forms. He can turn the dial on the watch like device to choose the alien he needs to battle a villain or to overcome any other adversity. He depresses the dial to initiate the transformation, where the Omnitrix then mixes his DNA with the alien DNA that it stores to conjure up the alien required.

In the original series the Omnitrix was black and had access to the aliens detailed above. These were viewed by Ben as silhouettes on the dial. In the Alien Force sequel, it had reconfigured itself into a green variety where the available aliens show themselves to Ben as a holographic image projecting from the dial.

Ben 10 Toys

To make the most of the huge success of the Ben 10 name, Bandai have made a huge range of Ben 10 associated toys, games and other merchandise. This brand is one of the most popular boys' toys ranges of the moment and has been for a few years. In 2009 it won 'Toy Of The Year' and 'Boys' Range Of The Year' and is aimed at children aged 4-12. The most popular toys are action figures of the aliens and the replicas of the Omnitrix.

There are a great deal of action figures to choose from, varying in sizes from the highly portable 6cm versions up to large scale 30cm options. Each size does slightly different things but most are very realistic to the cartoon characters and fully articulate.

There a number of Omnitrix watches to decide between too. Matching the Omnitrix from the original series are the Alien Viewer, F/X and Deluxe varieties. The Deluxe is certainly the best and does not cost much more than the others. The most up to date version accompanying the Alien Force show is the green Ultimate Omnitrix. This is a two in one Ben 10 toy as it comes with a small translucent alien that attaches to the top of the watch in an attempt to mimic the holographic image from the cartoon.

Ben 10 Games

In addition to the alien action figures, Omnitrix watch and other role play accessories, there is a large range of Ben 10 games to choose from. The best of the bunch are the video games which are available on most platforms, but this is only any use if you have one of the consoles to play them on. If you do, you will find a fairly easy to play but challenging beat-em game with good graphics. Players move through various scenes as Ben, transforming into one of a few aliens as need be to fight the baddies. Another great choice and more of a game to get your children running about is the Ben 10 Laser Set. This is made up of two chunky guns that have infrared sensors on that score hits made by the players opponents guns laser. There is a marble battling game called 'Alien Force Quickshot' where players shoot marbles at Ben 10 character cards loosely fitted into the base. There are also numerous card and board games although the latter are not well thought of.
