Who is Ben Stein
Ranked #6,685 in Entertainment, #74,345 overall
Anyone? Anyone?
Stein's an economist, policy wonk, cartoon character(s), game show regular, all-around braniac and not afraid to curse on air. All the important stuff, ya' know.
Ben Stein Says ...
I came to realize that life lived to help others is the only one that matters and that it is my duty...This is my highest and best use as a human.
Ben Stein: The Voice
Who knew we could love that monotone so much?
OK, so no matter what the man does, something about his voice just forces it into that kind of monotone that made him famous. If you've ever seen him not in a movie role, you know he has a little more range, but his voice is just perfect and so distinctive when he roles out the monotone. As a result, when he isn't playing himself in a movie, you'll often see him playing characters that are to be perceived as boring - a teacher, salesman, scientist.
His voice also makes him a winning choice for certain types of characters in animated pieces - anything that needs to come off as sad, depressed or dull. My latest favorite is in the Fairly Odd Parents, where he plays all the pixies. They're the bad guys who want to turn Fairyworld into a dull, gray, corporate kind of place and his voice just perfectly conveys the blandness of the characters.

Ben Stein: Win Ben Stein's Money
And so began a most intelligent of game shows with a sense of humor, fairly low stakes and a twist. Ben was the host of the show, opening it with a deadpan delivery of a line from a pop song, and asked the questions for the first half of the show. But the second segment, he would step down from the podium and take up a buzzer like a regular contestant. Sidekick Jimmy Kimmel (yes that guy) would take over the question answering while contestants tried to beat Ben at his own game and win a whopping $5000. I said it was low stakes!
The show was my first intro to Ben as anything other than an actor. Totally loved him and would have wanted to get on the show, but it was already out of production by the time I started watching. It was repeating on the Game Show Network for a while, but is off the air right now. So sad.

Ben Stein: Stirring the pot

Ben's no shrinking violet - he's willing to debate with anyone at anytime and as a conservative in a liberal industry, he's not stranger to controversy. But his latest project got a lot of people up in arms.
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is a documentary of Ben's exploration of intelligent design in the classroom and scientific research. Specifically the persecution of scientists and teachers who advocate intelligent design. Ben admits to believing in a higher power, but his basic beef boils down to a free speech issue. (Ben will be receiving an award from the EMA for the film.)
From the official website (no longer online):
In a scientific world gone mad, EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed is the controversial documentary that will chronicle Ben Stein's confrontation with the Neo-Darwinian machine, exposing widespread suppression and entrenched discrimination in his heroic quest to bring back freedom in our institutions, laboratories and most importantly, in our classrooms, with the help of the world's top scientists, educators and thinkers.

Ben Stein: Bring it on!
Ben's not afraid of you and neither am I! Don't assume that just because I have info on Expelled that I agree with Ben. But, I'm a passionate believer in free speech and the freedom to hold whatever opinion you want. (Hmm, so maybe I do agree with him.) So what have you got to say?

- I first knew of Ben Stein from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But for many years I liked listening to his financial commentaries. This was a wonderful lens you compiled of him.

- If you ever heard the guy talk about politics you realized he isn't actually that brilliant. He's shrill and clearly unable to use that supposedly large brain of his to display any semblance of logic in his arguments. Then of course he put out Expelled. So I guess, not that bright a guy.

- Although I don't agree with him on many issues, I think he's just brilliant. Too brilliant to run for any office, probably.

- I LOVED the "anyone, anyone" line in Ferris Bueller.
I taught a class in web design back in 2000 and I actually did the monotone "anyone? anyone?" when trying to get the class to respond to a question I asked from the front of the class. They of course, being of a younger generation, had no idea.
