Fragmentation, The Internet's Need for Aggregators, and Startup Opportunities

Recently Ben Behrouzi has been very focused around content accessibility and the data overload that is occurring online. The natural progression of the Net has produced a standard fragmentation of the Internet. More simply put, there are more online destinations that we care about, support or use than we have acceptable tools to conveniently access them with. With each destination offering and executing around a unique value proposition the Net has turned into a deep and wide place for every one of us.

Consider it. How many social networks are we a part of? How many shopping sites do we jump to and from? How many job boards do we use to post roles or find job seekers? Even more so, how much relevant information that we do not know about exists in cyber space? What proportion of it can search engines like Google and Yahoo capture on page one without being compelled to drop the rest due to low viewership numbers on page two and three? The variety and breadth of the web is being lost as quickly as it is being produced because our traditional methods of accessing this information are definitely becoming less sufficient. As more unique services are born, the more fragmentized accessibility becomes.

So what's the answer? One answer is more time. More time to be prepared to use all the different types of unique services one at a time. So when we search for something to buy we are able to search Google, Ebay, Amazon and others. The second option is assembly. In the same way a search engine aggregates and indexes sites and Internet content, we need a mechanism that aggregates the variety of unique services, not just sites online, that are available to us and we care about. Aggregation is key to maintaining accessibility of the entire internet.

Take Indeed.com as an example, an all in one search engine and dashboard for employment hunters. Indeed merges integrates and displays a significant proportion of all positions made public out in cyber space in one search. The innovative approach not only provides convenience but also defragments the accessibility of all job sites on the internet. Indeed is an example of needed and accepted assembly for the job space online. Or take Ben Behrouzi's latest portal LeapFish.com, an all in one Internet dashboard that works to capture the variety of the internet by integrating results from major internet destinations including YouTube, Ebay and others in a single search. LeapFish lends more accessibility to all of the different kinds of information we care about.

As a result users are conveniently presented with data that they wouldn't have traditionally been mindful of had they used a conventional engine. Assembly is an area of expansion for entrepreneurs, grappling with the information overload can deliver great value. Behrouzi forecasts growth in aggregation and would be prepared to invest in any innovative startups in this space.
