Top 5 must have Bench rest shooting accessories

If you are looking to go Bench rest shooting, there are several things you need to be prepared. Below is our list of the top five bench rest accessories.
  1. Custom Bench Rest Rifle: Your standard off the shelf rifle just won't cut it in this extreme sport. If you have loads of money to invest in your bench rest equipment, visit a custom rifle builder like D & B Supply. Other wise you might want to shop the Bench Rest Central Forums for used rifles.
  2. Long Range Rifle Scope: You will need a powerful rifle scope such as the Nightforce rifle scopes. You can also find good rifle scopes on Ebay.
  3. Ammo Box: Most bench rest shooters load their own ammo before heading to the next bench rest match. You will want a good ammo box to keep your brass in. This also provides an easy way to get your shells between rounds
  4. Shooting Rest: One of my favorite shooting rests is the Caldwell Sled Rest. Thes rest provide a perfect set up for bench rest shooting.
  5. Bench Rest Rifle Ammo: Unless you are loading your own ammo, you will need to visit an ammo supplier to get you shooting at the range. Make sure you buy Benchrest quality ammo. Long Range only.

Tips to better Benchrest Shooting

Here are some basics to practice when you are benchrest shooting.
  1. Adjust your scope for proper distance: Most shooters range in on smaller ranges. Be sure you adjust before your first practce shot at the long range.
  2. Know your benchrest shooting equipment: Make sure you have the right rifle, scope and ammunition to shoot on the appropriate range.
  3. Always - always follow the benchrest shooting range rules: Safety when shooting must always come first. Never load a rifle unless you are prepared to shoot and pointed down range.
  4. Avoid getting your cheek and eye to close to the scope: These guns pack a powerful punch and some will kick more than others based on the ammunition loads. Avoid getting a black eye or stitches from a scope kickback.
  5. Be respectful of other Benchrest shooters: Shoot your alotted time frame and gather your equipment so the next shooter can get prepared on the bench.

Readers would love to know about Preliminary Sighting In

This is where the fun begins. I recommend using a strong set of bags on a good benchrest or preferrably a vise type benchrest that securely holds the rifle from moving. These sometimes have some windage and elevation adjustment which helps in the preliminary positioning of the gun. I personally like to sight in at one hundred yards whereas some shooters choose a shorter range that will present the identical bullet level of affect as a result of trajectory of the actual round you're shooting. As an example, when you shoot your favorite spherical at 100yards it can additionally hit the goal a the same point by shooting at a closer distance eg; 25 yards. Place not more than three shot strings to determine your distinction between goal point and point of impact. If the purpose of affect is grouped at three inches horizontally from the purpose level then your adjustments shall be primarily based on the minute of angle (MOA) on your explicit acog scope.

Cool lens. I'm planning on going back to college to become a gunsmith and the long range shooting sector is especially interesting to me. I've got a .50 bmg lens that I'm working on, let me know what you think about it.
