About Green Tea

The benefits of drinking green tea are almost too numerous to list. Many people want to know if there is any truth to the claims that there are benefits of drinking green tea for dieting. My own personal experience suggests there are, but see what else it can do. Some evidence suggests that green tea drinkers have a lower chance of heart disease and that green tea can help protect against cancer.

Green tea originates from China and is associated with many cultures from the Middle East to China. Ancient Chinese people knew the health benefits of drinking green tea. In Ancient China, it was used especially to treat headaches and depression. Green tea is produced from the leaves of Camellia Sinensis. Unlike black tea, it contains only a very small amount of caffeine which is a stimulant.

Brewing Green Tea

Generally allow about one teaspoon of green tea for each 6 oz of water.

The time you should allow green tea to steep varies with the types of tea. Do not use boiling water. Generally the hottest water temperatures should not exceed 180°F to 190°F (82°C to 88°C) and brewing times do not need to exceed 2 to 3 minutes. You can brew with lower temperatures, 140°F to 150°F (60°C to 66°C) and the shortest brewing times are about 30 seconds.

In general, brew lower quality green teas at a hotter temperature and longer. Higher quality tea can be brewed cooler and for a shorter period.

Brewing green tea for too long or at too high a temperature results in a bitter, astringent drink. High quality green teas are often brewed 2 or 3 times.
