The health benefits of drinking green tea every day were discovered thousands of years ago
Legend has it, the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung was the first person to taste and discover the health benefits of green tea back in 2737 BC. He was boiling water to drink when some leafs from a nearby plant fell into the pot. The result was an aromatic and tasty herbal drink later known as green tea.
Because it tasted wonderful and had many health benefits, the emperor urged his people to drink green tea everyday. In 800 AD this green tea was brought to Japan by Buddhist monks. For centuries green tea become the staple drink throughout Asia before it finally made its way to the Western world.
Green tea comes from the plant called Carmellia sinensis. Much of the health benefits of green tea are due to the steaming method of preparing it. While black and oolong tea undergoes complete oxidization, green tea is only gently steamed, preserving the beneficial antioxidants in its natural form.
What are the benefits of drinking green tea every day?
Overview of green tea health benefits
Traditionally, Chinese green tea was believed to cure anything from headaches, general body aches and pains, to constipation and depression. Over the centuries, other benefits of drinking green tea have been discovered.
Drinking green tea is said to improve blood circulation throughout the body. Because green tea contains some caffeine, drinking it can stimulate the heart and allow blood to flow more freely through the blood vessels, which in turn can also improve mental clarity.
The detoxifying property of green tea comes from polyphenols, a naturally occurring antioxidant which is believed to combat harmful free radicals and hence, help keep the body healthy.
The antioxidants in green tea can also boost immunity, promote young-looking skin, and brighten the eyes. The Medical College of Georgia has discovered that green tea, shown to suppress inflammation, regulates the expression of Caspase-14, a protein in genes that regulates the life cycle of a skin cell. Furthermore, drinking green tea can help with digestion, delay the onset of diabetes, reduce fatigue, and even prolong lifespan. Well, I guess it's obvious that if you're healthy you live longer :)
Occasionally we come across food that is healthy but unfortunately, does not taste good. In the case of green tea, it's beneficial to our health and tastes good. Moreover, green tea tastes good hot or cold. How many other drinks can you say that about? So, whether it's cold or hot outside right now, why not drink some green tea and make yourself feel better? :)
Please note that in order to experience the benefits of drinking green tea, you must do it every day. You won't see very many benefits from it if you just drink it every now and then.

- I used to mainly drink black tea with milk, then began liking white tea. Lately I've tried to switch to oolong especially in the afternoons and when I am working (my husband's advice). see Steam the Black Dragon lens.
