Still just thinking

What are the benefits of welcoming a pet into your life?

  • Love
  • Companionship
  • Exercise
  • Focus
  • Health
  • Self-esteem
  • Social skills

Love

No one person will ever love you like your pet will love you. Animals are much less complicated in their emotional lives than humans and are willing to forgive and forget when you hurt their feelings. They are always happy to see you whether you were gone for 20 days or 20 minutes and are happy just to spend time with you and do not demand expensive gifts or meals.

Companionship

I work from home many days but I am never lacking for company as our dog Max is always by my side. He doesn't care if I am working on the computer, washing dishes, or gardening. Whatever I have to do he is happy to hang out with me and loves to hang on my every word.

Exercise

OK, this is more true with some animals (such as dogs and horses) than others (such as fish) but having Max means that I regularly have to get out of my chair and move around. He is a young dog and needs regular walks. I find these breaks are welcome not just to get my body moving but also clear out the cobwebs from my brain.

Focus

Having a pet makes you think about something else other than yourself. No matter how much you want to stay in bed there is another living being that needs you to get up and care for them. This can help you through difficult times and give you a reason for going on. Once you are out of bed to feed the dog, cat, bird, or whatever, then you might as well feed yourself too and the next thing you know you are at least going through the motions of life.

Self-esteem

Children who have pets have higher self-esteem than children without pets. This is even more true for children who are charged with taking care of the pet.

Social skills

Pets are great icebreakers. Sometimes you are out in public with your pet or someone notices the pictures you have displayed. However, I have also noticed that pets are a great topic of conversation and are a lot more fun to talk about than most people. Also, pets often bring you into a different circle of people

one more thing you can learn when having a pet is responsibility, specially for people who live by themselves.
