Paper or Digital - What does the future hold?
Looking for a way to justify switching your nurse practitioner office from paper charting to electronic medical records (EMR)? While paper-based records are still the preferred method of recording patient information for most US hospitals and nurse practitioner medical practices, the use of electronic medical records is growing. For those who have not made the switch yet, there are a number of reasons to begin EMR/EHR adoption over the continued use of paper records.
Nurse Practitioners Can Benefit From EMR Software
Both federal and state governments and insurance companies now actively promote the adoption of electronic medical records. As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Congress included both incentives and penalties for doctors who fail to use EMR's by 2015. Despite these regulations, there are still plenty of practical reasons for nurse practitioners to make the move to electronic records sooner than later.
- EMR simplifies organization. Collating paper records to a single location for filing or review is time-consuming and complicated. This process is be simplified with electronic records. Digital records can be stored and organized faster and easier than paper records.
- EMR increases portability and accessibility. When paper-based records are required in multiple locations, there are associated time and costs in copying, faxing, and transporting records when compared to the immediate access of digital records. Patient can be easily accessed from any internet connection at any time.
- Improved reliability and standardization. With standardized, pre-designed forms and the standardization of abbreviations and data input, improve overall reliability. This also allows the ability to more easily exchange records between different EMR systems. EMRs even allow for the input of data from mobile devices that are handwriting-capable.
- Improved reporting ability. Medical data from an electronic record system can be aggregated anonymously for statistical reporting. This information can be used for resource management, quality improvement, and overall patient tracking.
