Benefits Of Having A Hobby

Why Should I Have A Hobby?
Much has been written about the importance of maintaining balance in our lives. While not downplaying the importance of hard work and succeeding in your chosen career field, the old adage about all work and no play is one we should all pay heed to. Whenever someone places more emphasis on one aspect of their lives at the expense of others aspects, difficulties can arise. An individual, dedicated to his/her professional life career, can be phenomenal at work due to his/her single-mindedness at achieving career objectives but, behind the façade of success, he/she suffers from poor health, relations with his/her spouse and children are strained and he/she really has no friends to speak of outside of work.
How Can A Hobby Be Beneficial?
Hobbies can be beneficial in restoring the balance and harmony that maybe missing from your life. Hobbies can provide an outlet for our innate need to create. They can uncover and nurture talents you didn't even know you had.Perhaps you could write the next best-seller.
Pursuing your chosen pastime can broaden you social life as there are usually clubs and associations close by that hold regular meetings where people who share a common interest can gather to swap tips and stories and talk to their hearts' content about their passion.
Hobbies are encouraged by mental health professionals as a way to help people reduce their stress levels. When your mind is fully engaged in your hobby, the trials and tribulations of life in our fast-paced society have to take a backseat for awhile. By the time you return to your life, all those problems and challenges don't seem quite so overwhelming and you find that you can handle them more effectively.
If your hobby involves creating something, there is also the satisfaction of making something special for someone special. A hand-made gift says to the recipient, in no too uncertain terms, that you care. You cared enough to take the time and make the effort to create something truly unique for them and them alone. That gesture says more than any expensive, store-bought ever could. What Sort of Hobby Would Benefit Me?
Hopefully, by now, I've at least got you thinking about taking up a pastime. When your ready to take the next step and actually take up a hobby, keep in mind that it should engage your mind and be an activity that means something to you. Oh, and, don't limit yourself. A hobby can be practically anything.
Doing you enjoy creating something new out of raw materials? Why not try your hand at woodworking, sewing or cooking?
Does your artistic side need an outlet to express itself? Painting, sculpting and photography a just a few of the myriad options available to you. Do some research or, better yet, get stuck in. Try different introductory courses until you find what suits you.
Hobbies aren't limited to the cerebral or the creative. Do you enjoy action, adventure? Want to get the blood pumping and the adrenaline flowing? Extreme sports would probably suit you down to the ground.
Nor are hobbies solitary pursuits. Dancing is one example of a shared pastime. In a world where it seems like everything and everyone demands so much of your time, it can feel like you have not time for each other. Dancing is an ideal way to stay connected to your other half. Not to mention the health benefits. All that quick-stepping and twirling are sure to burn off a few calories and help keep you in tip-top shape. My Beneficial Hobby
I was lucky. I stumbled onto a hobby at a very early age and now, nearly forty years on, I can honestly say that I still look forward to spending time on it. I do counted cross-stitch. Over the years my skill has developed to the point where I can confidently call myself an expert. I am a member of the local embroidery club and we meet every week for a gossip and a laugh. Sometimes we actually do some stitching. I've got a subscription to Cross Stitcher magazine and have every issue since 2001. I go to craft fairs whenever possible to stay abreast of the latest trends in needlework in general. I even have my own 'studio'.When I'm stitching away, it's just me and the canvas. I'm quiet and chilled and the rest of the world doesn't even exist. I don't think I could cope without my hobby to fall back on when things get rough. Sometimes I even get withdrawal symptoms if I go to long without putting needle to canvas.

- A Positive Way to Escape Reality or Stress from Work or Home Life is Always a Good Thing! A Hobby is an Extended Expression of Ourselves, a hobby also Occupies our Time and our Own Natural Resources (Example: Strength, Patience, Endurance, etc.).
Hobbies Are Great, Uplifting and Useful!! ;)

- I completely agree with you about how important is to have an hobby. You explained it in a very clear and complete way. I'd really like to be able to use the needle, as I can see a friend of mine, she's very skilly and she makes wonderful things like pillows, for example, but.... after a couple of bad results, I realized that it's not my field. I'm better with a pen in my hand, rather than a needle :)
Thanks for your lens, I really enjoyed it!

- I think it is healthy for people to have a hobby. Maybe some day I will try cross stitching again. I know the friendships from hobby clubs can be great too. You listed some good reasons to have a hobby. Thanks!
