Benjamin Franklin, Revolutionary War Figure / Inventor / Writer

    * Born: 17 January 1706
    * Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts
    * Died: 17 April 1790 (pleurisy and old age)
    * Best Known As: The Founding Father who wrote Poor Richard's Almanach

He was the tenth son of soap maker, Josiah Franklin. Benjamin's mother was Abiah Folger, the second wife of Josiah.

Franklin was known as well for his popular sayings, such as:

"Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise"
"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."
"A penny saved is a penny earned."

 

Benjamin Franklin Biography Timeline 

1730/1748 : Founded the Pennsylvania Gazette
1732/1757 : Published the famous Poor Richard's Almanach
1736/1751 : Served as a member of the colonial legislature
1752 : Wanted to prove that electricity exists in the atmosphere
1754 : Delegate to the Albany Congress
1757/1762 : Represented the colony in England (Dispute over land and taxes)
1776 : Went to France. Seeks aid for the American Revolution
1781 : Negotiated the peace treaty with Britain
1783 : Helped negotiate and write the Treaty of Paris
1787 : Helped to achieve the adoption of the new US Constitution

Moved to Philadelphia when he was 17. Worked as a printer. Wrote pamphlets
Served as postmaster of Philadelphia
Founded the first American fire insurance company
Lived in Paris (American ambassador to France)
Invented diverse objects: lightning rod, stove, bifocal glasses
Founded an academy that became the University of Pennsylvania
Before the Revolutionary war broke : wrote many pamphlets promoting union among the colonies
Signed the Declaration of Independance
