Bermuda Shorts--A Great Way to Cool Off

It's believed that the British Army "invented" Bermuda shorts in the early 1900s as a way to cope with the warm, tropical climate of British-occupied territories, namely Bermuda. They found that cutting their trousers off at the knee made the heat much more bearable. The Royal Navy still wears them to this day.

These shorts are now very popular in warm-weather former British colonies and territories, and they are even considered appropriate for business attire in those locations. When worn for business/formal occasions, Bermuda shorts are typically one inch above the knee and worn with calf-length socks, dress shirt, tie, and a blazer.

It's important not to confuse Bermuda shorts with similar types of short pants, like capri pants, clam diggers, and cargo shorts. Bermuda shorts are characterized by their hem falling slightly above the knee and by their being tailored yet loose.
