Bern Switzerland

Bern Switzerland is the capital of Switzerland. Bern has a very pitoresque old town that has remained intact from its origin a from its construction between 800 to 500 hundred years ago.

The city grew out towards the west of the boundaries of the peninsula formed by the river Aare. Initially, the Zytglogge tower marked the western boundary of the city from 1191 until 1256, when the Käfigturm took over this role until 1345, which, in turn, was then succeeded by the Christoffelturm (located close to today's train station) until 1622.

Bern Old Town - A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Since 1983 the old town of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Old Town of Berne is the medieval city center of Berne, Switzerland. Built on a narrow hill surrounded on three sides by the Aare River, its compact layout has remained essentially unchanged since its construction lasting from the 12th to the 15th century.

Despite a major fire in 1405, after which much of the city was rebuilt in sandstone, and substantial construction efforts in the 18th century, Berne's old town has retained its medieval character.

In addition to many historical buildings, the seats of the federal, cantonal and municipal government are also situated in the Old Town.

As you can see on this small map image, the old town of Bern is built on a half island, a feature that was especially important in the middle ages. The river provided a natural barrier that made defending the town a lot easier. The banks of the river are high and steep, which added to the fortress like qualities this location provided.

The Leader in Swiss Ice Hockey - SC Bern

For many years now the players of the SC Bern ice hockey club play in the top third of the Swiss ice hockey league and regularly win the Swiss ice hockey championship.

The club goes back to the precurser clubs founded already in 1893. In it's current for the club was formally founded in 1930.

Bern is tha capitol of Switzerland and hosts the parliament and the executive offices for the Swiss Confederation. Many embassies are located in Bern. An other political hot spot is Geneva, where the UN offices are located.
