Bernal Heights is a great village-style neighborhood in San Francisco south of the Mission, roughly bordered by Mission St, Cesar Chavez, Bayshore Blvd/101, and Alemany Blvd/280 and magnificently crowned by Bernal Hill.
Cortland St runs through the heart of Bernal and is a one-stop-shop for most of your needs including a pet store, organic grocery, yoga studio, several bars and some great restaurants. The views from homes on Bernal Hill are breathtaking.
Bernal has 3 parks - Precita Park, Bernal Hill and Holly Park. It is serviced by the Route 67 Bus, and a moderate walk to the Muni where Cortland meets Mission. For car-owners, the neighborhood has onramps to both the 101 and 280 freeways, extremely well-positioned for commuting to the South Bay.
The area has a history of activism and strong literary and lesbian communities.
