Great Chairs Designed by Harry Bertoia
Bertoia's aim of creating functional art in the form of chairs has given us a collection of some of the coolest chairs created in the 20th Century. I believe their popularity will endure well into the 21st century. Check out this lens and see if you agree. (Ps. I have included a little treat for you along the way!)
Bertoia Chairs - The Beginning

The Bertoia Chair series was borne out of an experiment in space and form by the artist and sculptor, Harry Bertoia in 1950's. Bertoia's motivation was to create sculptural pieces that were also functional. Val Bertoia describes the results of his father's experimentation as follows: "The chairs Harry designed were definitely sculptures that contained the human (physical) body comfortably above the floor."
Bertoia experimented with the concept of bending metal rods into functional art pieces and produced a much lauded collection of pieces including:
The Bertoia Diamond Chair, The Bertoia Bird Chair, The Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise, The Bertoia Side Chair and the Bertoia Bar Stool.
The above collection was first produced by Knoll in 1952.
In The Words of the Designer
"If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes through them."

Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair

The Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair is innovative in it's design, and both comfortable and striking in appearance. The chair's delicately interwoven metal frame belies its strength and durability.
The welded steel rods are available in a choice of polished or satin chrome or in highly durable bonded rilsan in black or white. The frame is scratch, stain and chip resistant.
This chair can be purchased with a cushion or fully covered in a multitude of fabric colors. The Diamond Lounge Chair was designed with proportions that ensure that it is suitable for lounging.
This wide contoured lounge chair best compliments contemporary design schemes. However, it is equally at home in a family lounge or bedroom as it is in a corporate space.
The Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair remains ever popular over 50 years since its creation and I believe it is well a deserved inclusion in the category of the top 100 most famous chairs of the 20th century.
Dimensions:
Overall Dimensions: 28.25" H x 45" W x 31.5" D
Seat Height: 15.25

Bertoia Bird Chair
The chair's quirky shape sets it apart from this collection of chair designs.
This chair is very definitely a feature piece in a design scheme. The variety of upholstery colors available facilitates the utilisation of this chair as either a complimentary or a contrasting piece. Personally, I believe that it is best used in contrast to your scheme as it seems a pity to try to blend such a funky design with other pieces.
Why not liven up a neutral scheme of creams and browns with a Bertoia Bird Chair in the colour pictured above? Go wild and choose hot pink, lime green or red to add interest to a primarily black, grey or white scheme.
Dimensions:
Overall Dimensions: 40.25" H x 38.5" W x 33" D
Seat Height: 14.5"
Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise

The Bertoia Asymmetric Chaise is a beautiful, sculptural piece that is much lauded by designers the world over. While designed simultaneously with the rest of the Bertoia Collection it wasn't produced until more recent times.
I consider its shape to be dynamic with flowing curves creating a piece of such extroadinary visual appearance that it is difficult to believe that you can rest your weary bones on it!
The Asymmetric Chaise is available unupholstered, with an upholstered cushion or fully covered in a myriad of fabric colours.
Dimensions
53"W x 33"D x 40"H Seat Height 14"

Imagine yourself lounging (elegantly of course!) in this Harry Bertoia masterpiece! It is a feature piece, a talking point. It will draw your guests eye and evoke their admiration!
Bertoia Side Chair

The Bertoia Side Chair (sometimes known as the Bertoia Wire Side Chair) is available in the following styles:
- With full cover - Full covers are stretched over the wire seat basket and attached to the seat basket with hooks
- Replaceable seat cushion and back pad - Seat cushions and back pads are secured to the chair with domed metal lock snaps with fabric edges. Cushions and back pads are available in a variety of fabrics and leather.
- With Cowhide Pads
- Unupholstered
The frame is available in black, white, red, yellow, green, blue, polished chrome and satin chrome. Chairs with powder coat finish and vinyl seat cushion are appropriate for outdoor use with proper care and limited exposure to the elements.
Dimensions
21 3/4" W x 19 3/4"D x 28 3/4" H with a seat height of 17 3/4"
The Bertoia Side Chair looks great around a dining table (see below) or a meeting room table. It is also an excellent choice for a contemporary coffee bar or restaurant, in a lounge, a bedroom or waiting room.

Ok folks, we know how cool Harry Bertoia's designs are and this bar stool is no exception. They provide a fantastic, functional accessory to the most stylish breakfast bars around the globe.
They also adorn some of the chicest bars in some of the greatest destinations worldwide. It is with this in mind that I am going to shake this lens up a little and while I can't quite bring you a cocktail hour I will certainly bring you a cocktail 5 minutes!

Life and Times!

Harry Bertoia was born on 10th March 1915 in San Lorenzo, Pordenone, Italy. At the age of 15 he visited his brother in Detroit and decided to stay in the USA. He attended Cass Technical High School, where he discovered the art of making jewelry. He went on to study at the Art School of Detroit Society of Arts (College of Creative Studies) in 1938.
In 1939, he won a scholarship to Cranbrook Academy of Art and it was here that he met Ray and Charles Eames.
His professional life began in his workshop teaching metal work and jewelry design. Due to the scarcity of metal during the war years he focused more on jewlry making during this period.
He married Brigitta Valentiner in 1943 and moved to California to work with Charles and Ray Eames. Amongst other endeavours at that time, they began experimenting with moulded plywood and together with Eerio Saarinen they developed a method for making moulded plywood splints that would later evolve into processes for designing furniture.
Bertoia subsequently split with Eames, preferring to work with metal rather than wood. He established a studio in Pennsylvania in 1950 and began working with Hans and Florence Knoll. It was during this period that he designed the Bertoia Collection.
Initially the pieces, upholstered to varying degrees over a molded lattice of steel rods, were produced manually. Controversy ensued when an action by Herman Miller claimed that the patent for part of the collections design, incorporating two thin wires welded on either side of the mesh seat had been granted to Eames. Herman Miller won the action and the Bertoia collection was re-designed using a thicker, single wire and grinding dow the edge of the seat wirer at a smooth angle.
The Bertoia Diamond Chair was a commercial success and the royalties from the sales enabled Harry Bertoia to focus on sculpture. In 1957 he became a fellow at the Graham Foundation in Chicago. His work explored the relationship between metal and the sounds resulting from its touch or wind passing through the metal sculpture.
Bertoia worked extensively on this project producing 9 albums of the music created by his art, all entitled "Sonambient".

Care & Maintenance
Knoll Recommendations
- For the polished chrome rods, Knoll recommends cleaning with Windex or an automotive chrome cleaner such as Semi-Chrome twice a month.
- Apply a coat of hard paste wax to the rods to protect against moisture.
- For the stainless steel connections, Knoll recommends using Windex, Fantastik, or other non-abrasive household cleaners.
- For small scratches, rub with Comet, Ajax, or other mild abrasives in the direction of the grain.
- Apply a coat of auto wax to maintain beauty.
- To clean the cushion fabric, vacuum frequently or brush lightly to remove surface dust.
- Professional cleaning should be done regularly to remove soiling not cleaned by vacuuming. Wipe all spills immediately. Try a hidden area to test for color fastness with all stain removal methods.

Design Contemporaries of Harry Bertoia
Charles and Ray Eames

The great American designers Charles and Ray Eames were contemporaries of Harry Bertoia. Bertoia even designed their wedding rings! Although they had a falling out over the years, these designers worked together and doubtless influenced the outstanding results of each others design work.
It is said that the Eames and Bertoia worked together for so long that it is difficult to define the exact "genealogy" of the inspiration for the wire chairs.
The Eames Wire Chair (above) uses similar materials and techniques to those utilised by Bertoia in his collection. The welded metal base, is according to some commentators, reminiscent of the Eifel Tower.
The Eames made the rim of the chair a lighter-gauge wire and doubled it for stability to achieve strength requirements, an organic shape, and cost restraints. They achieved the first American mechanical patent for design for this element of the Wire Chair's design. This patent formed the basis of the litigation initiated by Herman Miller (producer) against Harry Bertoia.
The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman (below) was created using three curved plywood shells using thin layers of wood veneer. The shells and cushions interlock to form a solid chair.
The chair's low seat is permanently fixed in the recline position - perfect for relaxation.

- Great lens! I'm a fan of the Eames, and of design in general, so am happy to now discover Bertoia. I was especially impressed by the sonambient video, as I really like unusual, creative music. Amazing! Becuase of the music I have lensrolled this to my Who I Michael Masley lens, as Michael is the inventor of many instruments/soundscapes. 5 stars***** and a favorite. Thanks!
