A Guide To Berwick

Berwick is ideally located in the south east growth corridor of Melbourne and is approximately 45 kilometres south east of Melbourne's city centre

Today Berwick is a inviting mix of old and new. The main shopping belt along High Street and the streets leading off High Street have a 19th-century English village look. A lot of historic buildings still remain in and around Berwick along with many manicured gardens and streets lined with deciduous trees.

Some of the historic buildings still being used presently include The Berwick Inn, originally known as the Border Hotel, which was built in 1857 and the nearby Berwick Mechanics Institute & Free Library which moved to its present site in 1880. There are still several churches around the town centre which date back to the late 1800s.

The desirable mix of old and new is what gives Berwick its distinctive charm. Much of the old world charm has been retained in the main street with the older buildings and wide street, but this ole world charm mixes in nicely with the many newer contemporary style cafes and restaurants which have opened in recent years.

A Local Berwick Icon

Wilson Botanic Park is a 39 hectare site which was originally a basalt quarry that commenced commercial operations in the mid 1850's supplying rock fill used in the construction of the Gippsland railway line, and it continued as a commercial entity until 1979.
In 1992 the site was donated to the community by Mr George Wilson, grandson of the original land and it had been owned by the family since 1854. Since 1992 it has evolved into an oasis of gardens, flora and birdlife, picnic areas and scenic walking trails with lookouts. It also has some spectacular exposed rock formations, unique fossils which are more than 22 million years old and three picturesque lakes
